Elora felt everything moving too fast around her, like a tornado. She knew that this was the next step, but to actually do it terrified her. Plus, that her heart was split in two. She wanted to be with Azriel, but at the same time, leaving Mary behind felt like a betrayal.
“I want to move in the pack with Asher, but…” she said in a confused voice.
Azriel frowned his eyebrows, not expecting this reaction, “What is holding you back? Is the pack? told you that there is nothing to worry about as I will deal with them.”
Elora’s breath caught in her throat, her heart aching with longing and uncertainty. “It is not the pack. But what about Mary?” Her voice cracked with guilt, memories of their shared past flooding her mind. “She’s been with us through everything… She’s like family. I feel thorn and Asher will definitely miss her.”
Azriel nodded, understanding the problem, “I know, little dove. Trust me, when she left the pack many years ago it was like a huge blow for all of us. She was the female Beta, holding us all together and her departure was a big loss.”
Elora opened her eyes wide in surprise, “What?! Mary was the Beta?”
Azriel nodded, “Yes, she was a terrific woman. But after a lethal rogue attack, she lost her family.”
“Oh, poor Mary'”” Elora said; despite knowing about her tragic loss she never asked for details,
giving Mary her privacy as she realized that it was a very painful chapter for her.
Azriel took a long breath, as he looked at her conflicted. “Actually, now is my turn for a confession. I wanted to postpone this conversation, as everything happened so fast, but I feel that I owe you full disclosure, the same way as you did.”
Elora looked at him with curiosity, “What is it?”
After a pause, he continued, “Many years ago I met my first chance mate. Her name was Avril and
she was my sister’s friend. When she received her wolf, it was a surprise to all of us to discover that we were mates, but I accepted her on the spot. For me, the mate bond is a sacred thing, and I always knew that the Moon Goddess has a plan for all of us in her wisdom.”
She squeezed his hand in support as he continued his story, seeing behind the façade how much pain he hid.
“I was Alpha for just a few weeks, and I was on my first trip outside the pack to sign a treaty. While in the middle of the discussions, I felt the most terrifying pain that someone can feel, and I realized on the spot that my mate was hurt. I left the meeting, shifted to my wolf Thunder and rushed

towards my pack territory, but once I entered the border I felt the anguish and pain of multiple mind links getting broken.” He took a long breath before continuing.
“When I arrived, the pack was in chaos, and the most shocking part was to find my parents dead, along with the Beta and his son. I barely saved my sister, Kaia, who was on the brink of death. I started to search desperately for my mate Avril, hoping that she was safe in the pack bunker, but in the next moment something snapped inside me, the pain paralyzing me as I realized in horror that she had left this world.”
Azriel’s voice quivered with raw emotion as he recounted the tragic events that had haunted him for years. “Avril… she was everything to me,” he began, his eyes clouded with pain. We were supposed to have a future together, raise a family within our pack.”
Elora listened in stunned silence, her heart aching for the anguish etched across Azriel’s face. “I can’t imagine…” she whispered, her voice barely above a breath.
“They were ruthless,” Azriel continued, his jaw clenching with anger. “The rogues showed no mercy. They tore apart everything I held dear, leaving nothing but devastation in their wake. On that day they killed my mate, but also my unborn child.”
