Little Hope-1

Azriel and Lora froze, the shock of Markus’s news washing over them like a cold wave. The silence

between them was heavy, filled with unspoken questions and emotions they couldn’t quite

articulate.

“What happened?” Azriel finally broke the silence, his voice strained with agitation. “How did she succumb to the infection so fast? Or… did someone kill her? The lycans?” His mind raced with possibilities, none of them making any sense.

Lora remained silent, her thoughts spiraling as she tried to process the news. Despite everything Alena had done, the betrayals, the pain she had caused, Lora couldn’t suppress the conflicting emotions that surged within her. Alena was still her sister, and the finality of her death left Lora feeling strage, unsure of what she should feel.

Markus’s voice on the other end of the line pulled them both from their thoughts. He cleared his throat, his tone measured but tinged with frustration. “From what Layzal told me, after we left, Alena kept shouting, demanding to be healed. She claimed she could get the antidote, that she could still be useful. But when the infection started to spread to her face… something changed. It was like she had a nervous breakdown, realizing that there was no way out, that neither myself, nor Lora would come

to her aid.”

Azriel and Lora exchanged a glance, both of them feeling a mix of sadness and frustration. The image of Alena, once so confident and manipulative, reduced to desperation and panic, was a stark contrast to the person they had known.

“So… what happened next?” Azriel asked, his voice quieter now, but still filled with tension.

Markus sighed heavily before continuing, “She used her meal cutlery to pierce her skin, letting herself bleed to death. It happened so quickly that no one had a chance to intervene, not that they would have, given the risk of infection. And with her history, no one knew if it was just another ruse. No one could take the chance of getting too close.”

Azriel’s jaw clenched as he absorbed the information. “Wow,” he muttered, running a hand through his hair, his agitation evident. The idea that Alena had chosen such a brutal and coward way out, rather than facing her fate, filled him with a bitter sense of disappointment.

Markus’s voice took on an edge of anger as he added, “Alena chose the coward’s way out. Instead of seeking forgiveness, making amends… until the very last moment, she was hoping she could wriggle her way out of this mess. I’ve never met someone so unwilling to face the consequences of their actions.”

Lora, still pale, cleared her throat before speaking, her voice soft. “She was always like this, even as

a child. Alena never cared about the consequences. She always expected everyone to bend to her will,

to give her what she wanted. And most of the time, she got her way.”

There was a long pause as Markus hummed in agreement. “Layzal told me they incinerated her body on the spot, to make sure no one else would get infected. It was the safest option.”

Azriel nodded slowly, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. “Thanks for letting us know, Markus,” he said, his voice now steady, though still laced with the emotions that had surged through him moments ago. “We’ll talk tomorrow.”

“Of course,” Markus replied, his tone softening. “Take care, both of you. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight,” Azriel responded, ending the call. He placed the phone down on the coffee table, the room once again falling into an uneasy silence.

Lora looked at Azriel, her eyes reflecting the turmoil she felt inside. “I don’t know what to think, Azriel,” she admitted, her voice trembling slightly. “I hated her for what she did, but… but now, instead of feeling happy or satisfied, I am just feeling disappointed.”

Azriel reached out, pulling Lora into a comforting embrace. “I know, my love. It’s a lot to take in.” Moments later, as Azriel and Lora settled into bed, the weight of the day hung heavily between them. He turned to Lora, his expression soft but resolute. “Alena’s fate was the result of her own choices, you don’t need to be sad,” he said, his voice gentle yet firm.
