Late Night Calls-2
Stone’s face paled, the reality of Azriel’s words sinking in like a cold, hard truth. The chains around
his wrists seemed heavier now, the walls of the cell closing in on him. “I deserve a trial! You can’t
abuse your power, or you will be a hypocrite.”
Azriel started to laugh, “You deserve nothing, and you are not in charge. And your little reverse psychology trick will not work on me. Enjoy your stay in the Stormheart Pack’s dungeon,” he said over his shoulder, his voice laced with finality. “It’s the last home you’ll ever know.”
With that, Azriel exited the cell, the heavy door slamming shut behind him, leaving Councilor Stone alone in the dark, the echoes of his threats fading into the silence.
As Azriel exited the dungeon, the cold night air hit him, but it did little to quell the burning rage that simmered beneath his calm exterior. His beast was restless, pacing within him, growling with a thirst for blood that matched his own. Every fiber of his being wanted to tear Councilor Stone apart, to unleash the fury that had been building for years. But he knew that a quick death would be too merciful, too easy. Stone’s punishment needed to be deliberate, calculated, a reflection of the heinous acts he had committed.
Azriel clenched his fists, taking a long, deep breath to steady himself. He had to keep control. The satisfaction of Stone’s suffering would come, but it would be on his terms, not dictated by his anger. Slowly, he released the breath, feeling the tightness in his chest ease just slightly as he made his way toward the warmth of his home.
As he entered the house, the familiar comfort of it and the scent of his mate immediately began to soothe the frayed edges of his mind. The soft glow of the living room lights welcomed him, and he found himself relaxing despite the storm still brewing inside him. There, on the couch, was his mate, Lora, sitting peacefully with their son, Asher, curled next to her with his head on her lap. The television was on, playing a Netflix show, but the sound was low, almost a background hum.
Lora’s head was tilted slightly, her eyes heavy with sleep as she watched the screen with only half interest as she was caressing their son’s head. Asher was deeply asleep, his small hand clutching the fabric of his mother’s shirt, his face nestled against her as if he couldn’t bear to let her go even in sleep.
Azriel felt his heart soften at the sight, a tender smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. He approached quietly, not wanting to disturb the peaceful scene. In a hushed voice, he asked, “Why is he not in bed? It is quite late.”
Lora looked up at him, her expression a mix of affection and conflict. “I tried to put him to bed,” she whispered, “but he was so clingy tonight. He insisted on staying a little longer with me, and before I

knew it, he fell asleep. I didn’t have the heart to take him to his room.” She paused, gently brusting
a stray lock of hair from Asher’s forehead. “I missed him too much as well, Azriel. I just wanted to hold him, feel his little heart beating against mine. With all the past events that happened, I just needed him next to me.”
Azriel’s smile widened, amused by her tender weakness. He sat down beside her on the couch,,his eyes filled with warmth as he gazed at his sleeping son. He reached out, gently caressing Asher’s cheek, his fingers light as a feather against the boy’s soft skin. “I missed him so much, too,” he
murmured, his voice thick with emotion.
Lora studied his face, her expression growing more concerned. “Are you okay?” she asked softly her intuition sensing the turmoil within him. “I can feel that you’re conflicted. Do you want to talk about it? Is everything alright?”
Azriel looked at her, his gaze tender despite the darkness that lingered behind his eyes. “Yes, my
dove,” he reassured her, his tone gentle. “We’ll talk tomorrow. Tonight, let’s just enjoy this moment.
I need to take him to his bed.”
Carefully, Azriel slipped his arms around Asher, lifting him with a father’s practiced ease. The boy
stirred slightly but didn’t wake, his head resting against Azriel’s shoulder as he carried him upstairs to his bedroom. Lora watched them go, her heart swelling with love for the two most important
people in her life.
Once in Asher’s room, Azriel laid him down on his bed, tucking the blankets around him with care.
He leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to his son’s forehead, his heart filled with a deep, unspoken vow to protect this boy, to ensure that no harm ever came to him. The rage that had consumed him earlier was still there, but it was tempered now by the love he felt for his family, grounding him
in the promise of a better future.
As he turned to leave the room, he glanced back one last time, watching Asher’s peaceful face.
The boy’s innocence, his pure heart, these were the things Azriel was fighting for.
Azriel returned to the living room, where Lora was still sitting on the couch, waiting for him. He sat
down beside her again, pulling her close, and together they sat in comfortable silence, finding solace in each other’s presence. The warmth of her presence and the comfort of their home had
almost pushed the earlier events of the night to the back of his mind. He was about to suggest

breaking the quiet.
His brow furrowed in concern as he wondered who could be calling him at such a late hour. He
reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone, and his frown deepened when he saw Markus’s
name on the screen. It wasn’t like Markus to call without reason, especially at this hour.

“Who is it?” Lora asked softly, sensing his unease.
“It’s Markus, Azriel replied, answering the call. “Yes, Markus?”
Markus greeted him in return, his voice sounding unusually tense. “Azriel, are you with Lora?”
Azriel’s concern grew, and he quickly put the phone on speaker so Lora could hear as well. “Yes I’m with her. What’s going on?”
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line, and Azriel could hear Markus take a deep breath, as if steadying himself. When he spoke again, his tone was conflicted, almost hesitant. have news… for both of you.”
Azriel and Lora exchanged a quick glance, both of them sensing the gravity in Markus’s voice, “Wh at is it?” Azriel asked, his voice steady, though his heart began to pound faster in his chest.
Markus cleared his throat, and when he finally spoke, his words were heavy with finality. “Layza just
called me earlier and he let me know that… Alena is dead.”
