Late Night Apologies-1
Kaia woke with a start, her eyes fluttering open to a scene she hadn’t expected. The familiar, comforting scent of Markus surrounded her, and it took her a moment to realize she was being carried. His strong arms held her securely, cradling her against his chest as they moved through the dimly lit corridors of the castle.
“Shh, rest, my love,” Markus whispered, his voice a gentle rumble in her ear. “I’ve got you. You fell asleep in my office.”
Kaia blinked her tired eyes, her mind still foggy from sleep. She hadn’t even realized she’d dozed off, exhaustion finally catching up with her after the intense day they’d had. The weight of everything: the funeral, her vision, the plans, the looming threat, had taken its toll. But now, in Markus’ arms, she felt a strange mixture of comfort and embarrassment.
*Put me down,* she mind-linked him, noticing the curious glances from the staff as they passed by. *Everyone is staring at us.*
Markus chuckled softly, his laughter vibrating through his chest. *Let them stare, my love. I’m not going to stop showing you my attention just because there are people around.*
Kaia blushed at his words, a warm, pleasant flush spreading across her cheeks. Despite the weight
of their responsibilities, Markus always had a way of making her feel cherished, reminding her of
the love they shared. It was a small but powerful comfort in the midst of everything they were facing. They were not fated mates, but the love and respect they had for each other was very
strong.
By the time they reached their bedroom, the castle had grown quiet. The events of the day had left everyone weary, and it seemed that the castle itself was taking a moment to breathe. Markus
gently pushed open the door with his shoulder, carrying her inside.
He moved toward the bed with the same careful, deliberate grace he always showed her, and as he set her down on the soft sheets, Kaia finally spoke, her voice still thick with sleep. “Where is everyone? The meeting… Prince Layzal… did you find another solu-”
But before she could finish, Markus placed a finger on her lips, silencing her gently. “Shhh, my love,” he murmured, his eyes filled with a mixture of affection and concern. “Forget about all of that for now. Rest. We can talk about everything tomorrow. You must be exhausted.”
Kaia’s mind swam with the urge to protest. She felt the weight of responsibility pressing on her, reminding her of all the things that needed to be done, the decisions that couldn’t wait. But as she looked into Markus’s eyes, she saw the sincerity in his gaze. He was right, she was exhausted, both mentally and physically. She needed rest if she was going to be of any use to anyone.

Still, a small smile tugged at her lips as she tried to inject some humor into the moment. “I stil!
need to take a shower,” she murmured, feeling the grime of the day clinging to her skin.
Markus grinned, mischief sparking in his eyes. Before she could react, he scooped her back up into his arms, eliciting a surprised squeal from her. “Let me help you, my queen,” he said playfully,
carrying her toward the bathroom.
Kaia couldn’t help but laugh, the sound bubbling up from deep within her. At this moment, despite the seriousness of everything else, she felt a lightness she hadn’t experienced in days. It was a reminder of the normalcy they could still find in each other, a brief reprieve from the storm brewing
outside their walls.
Markus gently set her down in the spacious bathroom, the room already warm from the steam of the waiting shower. He began to draw the water, adjusting the temperature until it was just right. As the water began to cascade down, filling the room with the soothing sound of falling rain,
Markus turned back to Kaia, his expression softening.
“Come on,” he said, his voice low and intimate. “Let me take care of you tonight.”
Kaia met his gaze, her heart swelling with love and gratitude. She nodded, her earlier fatigue finally catching up with her fully. Markus helped her undress, his touch tender and reverent, and then guided her into the warm spray of the shower. The water was a welcome balm, washing away the
stress of the day and leaving her feeling lighter.
