Late Night Apologies-2
Markus joined her, his strong arms wrapping around her from behind as they stood under the water. For a while, they just held each other, letting the warmth and the moment wash over them.
No words were necessary, everything they needed to say was conveyed in the way they touched, the way they leaned into each other, the way they breathed in sync.
After a time, when the water began to cool and the steam started to dissipate, Markus gently dried her off, wrapping her in a thick, soft towel. He led her back to the bed, pulling the covers over her as she settled into the plush pillows.
As he crawled into bed beside her, Markus pulled her close, wrapping her in his arms once møre. Sleep now, Kaia,” he whispered, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. “We’ll face everything together, but tonight, just rest.”
Kaia sighed contentedly, allowing herself to relax fully into his embrace.
Despite the exhaustion that should have overtaken her, Kaia found herself wide awake, staring at the ceiling as the events of the day replayed in her mind. The room was quiet, the only sounds being the faint rustle of the sheets and the steady rhythm of Markus’s breathing beside her. But
even that comforting presence couldn’t chase away the unrest that lurked inside her.
Sensing her awake, Markus stirred, his arm tightening around her waist. “What’s the matter, my love? Do you need anything?” he asked softly, his voice thick with the remnants of sleep.
Kaia hesitated for a moment, trying to pinpoint exactly what was keeping her from drifting off. “I don’t know,” she finally admitted. “I just… I can’t seem to sleep.”
Markus shifted beside her, leaning up on one elbow as he gazed down at her. The room was dim,
but she could see the concern etched on his face. Without another word, he began to massage her scalp with gentle, soothing movements, his fingers weaving through her hair. It was a gesture of comfort and intimacy, one that usually helped her relax, but tonight it only brought her a
bittersweet sense of calm.
As his fingers continued their rhythmic motion, Markus’s voice broke the silence, though it was tight with emotion. “I’m sorry for putting you through so much today,” he said, his words laced with guilt.
Kaia turned her head slightly, looking up at him in confusion. “What do you mean?” she asked, though she had a feeling she knew where this was going.
He sighed, the sound heavy with the weight of his thoughts. “My mother’s funeral,” he replied. “I know you were there to support me, but… it doesn’t make it any easier to disregard the fact that

she was the mastermind behind your agony, behind the death of your family and the attack on pack. If only I had sensed it earlier… if only I had known.”

Kaia’s heart ached at the pain in his voice. She could feel the self-reproach and the burden he
carried on their mate bond. She reached up, placing her hand over his as she spoke. “I won’t lie,
Markus. It took everything in me today not to lash out. She tried to kill me… to kill our baby. And for
what?”
Markus’s hand stilled in her hair, and he closed his eyes, his expression pained. “I know, Kaia. And
can’t tell you how much I regret it. Every day, I wish I could change what happened, that I could
have protected you better, that I could have stopped her sooner.”
“It is what it is,” Kaia whispered, echoing the words they had both said before, words that had
become a bitter mantra over the past months. “We can’t change the past, Markus. We can only
move forward.”
“I don’t deserve your forgiveness,” Markus said, his voice rough with emotion.
Kaia squeezed his hand, drawing strength from the contact. “It’s not about deserving, Markus. It’s
about love. I love you, and we’ve faced too much together to let this tear us apart, especially
because of her. We’ll get through this, just like we’ve gotten through everything else.”
Markus nodded, though the anguish in his eyes didn’t fade. He pulled her closer, wrapping his arms
around her as if he could shield her from the memories, from the pain that still lingered.
Kaia rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. “We’ll figure this
out,” she whispered, more to herself than to him. “We’ll make it through, one step at a time.”
Markus held her tightly, his embrace a silent promise. “We will,” he agreed, his voice resolute despite the turmoil he felt.
For a while, they lay in silence, holding each other as they processed the day’s events. Kaia could
feel the tension slowly ebbing away, replaced by a quiet determination. They had faced so much
already: betrayal, loss, and the looming threat of war, and yet they were still here, still fighting.
As the night wore on, Kaia finally felt her eyes grow heavy, the exhaustion she had been resisting
finally catching up with her. Markus’s touch, combined with the steady rhythm of his breathing,
lulled her into a sense of security, and she found herself drifting off at last.
Just before sleep claimed her, Markus’s voice reached her ears, a soft murmur filled with love and
regret. “I’ll protect you, Kaia. No matter what comes next, I’ll keep you safe.”
Kaia didn’t have the strength to respond, but she didn’t need to. She knew, deep in her heart, that Markus meant every word.
