Hector’s stern face softened into a wide smile, a glimmer of approval in his eyes. “Consider it done,

Your Highness.” He took a few steps toward the door, then turned back to Kaia. “It will be a

privilege to serve you.”

Kaia returned his smile, feeling à surge of confidence. As Hector exited the room, she looked at

Lora, who was beaming with pride.

“You’re going to be an amazing Queen, Kaia,” Lora said warmly.

“Now, let’s have a seat and let’s drink tea till we figure out what the next step is,” Kaia replied

decisively.

Half an hour later, Hector returned to the room where Kaia and Lora were waiting. He entered with his usual composed demeanor, carrying three neatly bound folders in his hands. After a respectful

bow, he addressed Kaia.

“Your Highness, I have the shortlist, as requested,” he said, handing the folders to her.

“Thank you,” Kaia replied as she took them from him, feeling a little more confident with each small

step forward.

“Is there anything else you require, Your Highness, or shall I return to my duties?” Hector asked, his

tone polite but professional.

Kaia glanced at the first folder, then looked back at Hector with a thoughtful expression. “Actually, Hector, before you go, aside from the data in their profiles, I’d like to hear the gossip and your personal opinions. What do you think about each of them?”

Hector seemed momentarily surprised by her request, not expecting such an unorthodox approach from the new Queen. Especially as the former Queen was always a bit cold and extremely formal with all the staff. But he quickly recovered, clearing his throat before he began.

“Of course, Your Highness,” he said, and then he opened the first folder for a quick glance before speaking. “The first candidate is Alisa Morven. She’s currently the Deputy Chief of Staff and has

been working in the castle for over a decade. She’s known for her efficiency and attention to detail.

Alisa is quite popular among the lower staff because she’s fair but firm. There’s a lot of respect for

her work ethic.”

Kaia nodded, taking in the information. “And what about her personality? Any potential issues?”

Hector hesitated for a moment, then continued. “Alisa is competent, no doubt about that, but she

can be… rigid. She follows the rules to the letter and can be unflexible at times. There’s talk that

she struggles to think outside the box, which might be a disadvantage in a role where creativity and adaptability are required.”

Kaia made a mental note, appreciating the insight. “Interesting. And the next one?”

Hector moved on to the second folder. “The next candidate is Corwin Voss. He’s relatively new to

the castle, having only been here for about three years, but he’s made quite an impression. He’s a

bit of a rising star, very ambitious, innovative, and not afraid to take risks. Corwin has a knack for

seeing the bigger picture and is known for his strategic thinking.”

Kaia raised an eyebrow. “That sounds promising. Any downsides?”

Hector smiled faintly. “Well, some people think he’s a bit too ambitious. There’s a certain

arrogance about him, and he’s been known to step on a few toes to get what he wants. He’s also very focused on his career, sometimes at the expense of building strong relationships with his

colleagues.”

Kaia exchanged a glance with Lora, who gave a small nod. “And the last one?”

Hector flipped to the third folder. “The last candidate is Tamsin Fadal. She’s currently the Head of Logistics and has been with the castle for seven years. Tamsin is highly organized and has a reputation for being able to handle high-pressure situations with grace. Trust me, nothing could break that girl easily. She’s also well-liked among the staff for her calm demeanor and ability to keep things running smoothly.”

Kaia considered this, intrigued. “She sounds like a strong candidate. Any concerns?”

Hector paused before speaking. “Tamsin is reliable and dependable, but some say she lacks a certain… fire. She’s very good at maintaining order, creating very easy connections. The downside

would be that she was an orphan, so her past was not an easy one. So, even if she works in an important position, she is still facing issues every day, and she is challenged constantly to prove herself over and over again, especially in the castle where image and power are main currencies.

She is a bit of a dark horse.”

Kaia tapped her fingers thoughtfully on the folders, processing everything Hector had told her. She

appreciated his candor and the depth of his insights.

“Thank you, Hector,” she said finally. “This is exactly what I needed to hear. Can you please make

sure that in the next 2 hours I will have a 15-20minutes chat with each of them? Don’t tell them

why, just that the new Queen is trying to know the staff better.”

Hector gave a small bow. “It’s my pleasure, Your Highness, and consider it done. If there’s nothing

else, I’ll return to my duties.”

Kaia smiled at him. “Go ahead, Hector. And thank you again.”

After Hector left, Kaia turned to Lora, holding up the three folders. “Well, what do you think?”

Lora tilted her head thoughtfully. “They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but it depends on what you want in a Chief of Staff. Alisa is reliable but maybe too rigid. Corwin is ambitious, but could be risky. And Tamsin is calm and organized, but perhaps an under-dog.”

Kaia sighed, feeling the weight of the decision. “I need someone who can help me navigate all of this, but also someone who won’t be afraid to tell me the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable. I can’t do it by myself.”

Lora smiled warmly. “Then go with your instincts, Kaia. You’re the Queen now, and you have the right to choose someone who aligns with your vision. And, maybe…. You can cheat a bit.”

“What do you mean?” Kaia frowned at her.

Lora cleared her voice before continuing, “Did you try till now to actually ask for a vision and control when it happened?”

“No, never. With all the craziness of what happened, I never tried,” Kaia admitted.

“Then, give it a shot. Let’s try,” Lora told her with a smile.

“But how?” Kaia replied, confused.

Lora replied, encouraging her, “It was the same for me when my abilities manifested, and it took me so long to be able to control it, mostly because I was scared. Now, take the first folder in your hand, focus on the candidate’s photo and just let everything go.”

Kaia looked at Lora, before opening the first folder.
