Tim froze in place, the words echoing in his mind. Dana’s tear-filled eyes confirmed his worst fear.
He couldn’t believe what he had just heard.
“What do you mean you belong to someone else?” he asked, his voice incredulous, almost
disbelieving.
Dana started to sob, unable to meet his gaze. “Tim, I…”
“Speak!” he shouted, losing control for a moment, pushed by a surge of jealousy. “Who is he?!”
Her voice trembled as she replied, “His name is Stephan and…”
“How long?” Tim cut her off, his voice cold and demanding. “How long have you ‘belonged’ to this
other man?”
“It’s not like that,” she tried to explain, but he raised his voice again, more forceful this time. “I asked you a simple question that I deserve to know: how long?” he repeated, his voice like ice.
Tears flowed down her face as she choked out the words, “F.. Fifteen years.”
“Damn it!” Tim shouted, driving his fist into the nearby wall, leaving a gaping hole. The sound of
plaster cracking echoed through the room.
“Tim, please,” Dana tried to reach out to him, but he refused to listen, cutting her off again. “All this time, you had another man in your mind? And I was just an inconvenience?”
“It is not like that!” she cried harder, but Tim’s eyes were filled with rage and hurt.
“I need air,” he said, his voice shaking with anger and betrayal.
“Don’t go..” she cried behind him, but he stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him. A moment later, she heard the unmistakable sound of him shifting into his beast form and running
off into the night.
Left alone, Dana crumpled to the floor, crying and trembling. She could feel Tim’s pain through their bond – the hate, the disappointment – and it drove her mad with guilt. She barely managed to drag herself into the shower, hoping the water would help her think more clearly.
Under the spray of hot water, she pressed her forehead against the cool tiles, trying to collect her thoughts. The truth about Stephan weighed heavily on her, and the pain she felt from Tim was
almost unbearable.
She replayed the conversation in her head, the look of betrayal on Tim’s face, the anger in his voice. She had tried to explain, but the words had stuck in her throat. How could she make him

understand that Stephan was not what he seemed? That she had felt bound to him not by her own choice?
After she finished, Dana stood in front of the mirror, her reflection a portrait of inner turmoil. She dried herself methodically, but her eyes kept drifting to the mark on her neck – Tim’s mark. It was a symbol of their bond, a bond she cherished secretly in her mind, but also one that now felt like a ticking time bomb.
She touched the mark gently, feeling the raised skin beneath her fingers. The gravity of what had happened weighed heavily on her. She knew that the only way to keep Tim alive would be to find a witch who could remove the mark. It was the only solution she could see, the only way to sever the bond without torturing him with the pain that will follow or for him to be killed by Stephan.
Her thoughts drifted back to Stephan and his coven, the place she dreaded returning to. She knew that once her mission was over, she would have to go back, and the hell awaiting her there was almost too much to bear. Stephan’s madness and control would only intensify, and the pain and betrayal Tim would feel through their bond would be excruciating.
Dana felt a wave of despair wash over her. She couldn’t do this to Tim. She couldn’t let him suffer because of her past. She would rather die than be the cause of his pain and betrayal.
She wrapped the towel around herself and leaned against the sink, her thoughts racing. She had to find a way to fix this. She had to protect Tim, even if it meant sacrificing herself in the process. The bond they shared was too precious, too important, to be tainted by her past.
