Kaia’s eyes filled with worry as she listened to their exchange. “What can we do?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Markus’s gaze softened as he looked at her, but his resolve was firm. “We need to act quickly. I’ll call for an emergency Council meeting. We need to coordinate our response to both the plague and the vampire threat. This is going to be a battle on multiple fronts.”

Azriel nodded, his expression determined. “I’ll start contacting the Alphas. We need to be ready for anything. And I will speak with Lora to see how we can help.”

Markus looked at him conflicted, “Azriel, I don’t want to push her into anything. Her safety is a priority.”

“I appreciate this, but you know Lora. She is a doctor and has a compassionate heart. I will be there to stop her when she pushes it too much. Now, I will let you … and put some clothes on you,”

Azriel added with a conflicted look before rushing outside the room.

Markus nodded as he turned with a conflicted look towards Kaia. She smiled in his direction as

she jumped from her bed and started to search for her dress.

“I’ll go pack a small bag quickly and be ready in a few minutes,” she said, her tone determined.

Markus’s words stopped her in her tracks. “You will not come with me.”

She froze, her heart plummeting to her feet. “What do you mean?” she asked him in a confused

voice.

Markus took a few steps towards her, gently grabbing her shoulders. “I need you safe, Kaia. This pack is the best place for you right now. I can’t risk knowing you’re out there, vulnerable to an outbreak or vampire attacks.”

Her anger flared as she retorted, “But my sister-in-law can join Azriel in the dangerous packs, and I can’t join you? Plus, I will have you next to me, so I can be vulnerable.”

“Because she’s a healer and a doctor, and the only change that these infected wolves have to survive. It is different,” Markus replied, his frustration evident.

Tears welled up in Kaia’s eyes as she cut him off, “But I’m nothing, I have no skills or abilities to help in any way?”

Markus cursed under his breath. “I didn’t say that-”

“I’m not dense, Markus,” she interrupted, her voice growing louder. “You told me that we would be

chosen mates, that we are in this together, but at the first sign of trouble, you cast me away like I’m

useless.”

Markus’s patience wore thin as his temper flared. Usually, he was a very calm person, but if he was pushed too far or the stakes were too high, he could explode, and once this happened, he could usually do unpredictable things. This was happening extremely rarely, but now he felt himself in

one of those situations.

“I don’t have time for this, Kaia. Time is of the essence. I just want you to be safe, damn it. I can’t focus on these crises and worry about you at the same time. Please try to understand me.”

But Kaia was too enraged to listen. She finished closing her dress with shaky hands. “Don’t worry, you won’t need to worry about me. It seems that in the end there were just nice words, but we are hit by real problems. You finally revealed how you really see me: like a weak link. I will not bother you,” she spat, turning to leave the room in anger as the tears threatened to spill. Her heart was breaking, and she felt that she couldn’t breathe. Just minutes ago they were ready to mate and

mark each other, and now he was treating her like an omega.

“Kaia, stop, damn it! Please listen!” Markus said, full of frustration, as his temper was boiling at the surface. He loved this stubborn girl, but this time he could feel how his control was slipping as him and Stinger felt their feral alpha side coming to the surface. The last few days were difficult for him trying to woo her, the sexual frustration, the pressure, the damn Royal Courtship, plus that he was so close to mating and marking her today. So, when she turned her back on him and made her way towards the exit, something snapped inside him, as he made a feral sound, “I said, stop, mate!
