“Indeed,” Azriel agreed. “We’ll get through this, Markus. Together.”

Markus asked, his voice filled with genuine concern, “How is Kaia? Has she recovered from her

coma?”

Azriel’s tone turned grim as he replied, “No improvement, Markus. She’s still in a coma, kept alive only by the machines. It’s been a nightmare. I am afraid that we will lose her.”

Markus’s heart filled with sadness at the news. “I’m so sorry to hear that, Azriel. Has Lora tried to heal her yet?”

Azriel sighed, feeling the weight of the situation. “I haven’t had the chance to speak with Lora about it yet, but I’ll address the issue today. With everything that’s been happening, it’s been hard to find the right moment, and Lora herself just woke up yesterday evening.”

“If you need anything, I’m here for you. If you need to transfer her to the Royal hospital, please let me know. Maybe we can try any alternative healing, or Aura, the witch could try something as well,” Markus assured him. “Also, I wanted to let you know that Lora’s name is now clear from the Terror

List. She doesn’t need to worry about that anymore.”

Azriel felt a wave of relief wash over him. “That’s good to hear, Markus. However, we’d like to keep her original identity a secret. That was Lora’s decision. She doesn’t want anything to do with the Black Forest Pack or its members.”

Markus nodded in agreement, understanding the depth of Lora’s pain and her need for a fresh start. “I respect that. Just know that whatever you need, I’m here to help. We’re in this together.”

“Thank you, Markus,” Azriel said sincerely. “We’ll get through this, one step at a time.”

After taking a moment to process the gravity of Markus’s story, Azriel decided to address the lingering questions on his mind. “Markus, do you think the punishment for Alena wasn’t too light? Why wasn’t she banished or thrown into a dungeon?”

Markus sighed heavily; the weight of leadership clear in his voice. “The decision wasn’t easy, Azriel. Our immediate instinct was to banish her. But Alena is the Beta’s daughter and has been a Luna for years. We feared that, out of spite, she might go to an enemy pack or join the rogues and sell our secrets. That could endanger us all. She has no dignity or loyalty.”

Azriel nodded, understanding the delicate balance of the decision but still grappling with its implications. “But is making her work at the lowest level really enough?”

Markus explained further, “We wanted her to learn humility. Being in a dungeon would be too easy.

In her current state, wolf-less and stripped of all privileges, she’ll have to live as the lowest member of the pack. Every day, she’ll face the consequences of her actions, and that’s a fate worse than banishment for someone who once held so much power. Plus, she would spend her nights in the dungeon. She will be under surveillance 24/7 for the rest of her life, as a ankle monitor was installed on her. Her friend Danielle, suffered the same faith.”

Azriel’s brow furrowed with concern. “And what about Alpha Alex? Why wasn’t he punished more severely? Demotion to a Beta rank is a joke.”

Markus’s expression turned contemplative. “After I checked all the facts, I realized that Alex was just a proud fool who let himself be controlled by pride and a manipulative woman. He’s lost

almost everything: his mates, his rank, and the respect of his pack. Now, he’s on probation, and he

knows that if he doesn’t mend his ways, he’ll lose the pack entirely. Sometimes, living with the

consequences of one’s actions is a more effective punishment than anything else. There is no

guarantee that he will become Alpha again. I am trying to find a long-term solution at the moment

to see who Alpha Ben’s successor could be, but an Alpha from outside the pack is not easily

accepted.”

Azriel took a deep breath, absorbing Markus’s reasoning. “I see. It makes sense, I suppose. But it’s

still hard to grasp how things could have gone so wrong.”

Markus nodded solemnly. “It is hard. But we have to move forward and focus on healing and rebuilding. The outbreaks and the Council’s demands are only going to add to our challenges.”

After ending the call, Azriel returned to the dining hall, where Lora and Asher were waiting. He approached Lora, taking her hand gently in his.

“All OK?” she asked him in a curious tone.

“Yeah, it was Markus on the phone. Once we send Asher to school, we need to talk,” he said softly.

Lora looked up at him, her eyes filled with concern. “OK, give me 10 minutes.”

Ten minutes after she sent Asher to school, Lora entered his office. She took a seat across from

him, her curiosity obvious.

Azriel took a deep breath and began recounting his conversation with Markus. He told her about the shocking revelation that Alena, her sister, was Markus’s mate. Lora’s eyes widened in disbelief, her emotions a whirlwind of shock and anger as Azriel detailed the betrayal and the judgment that

followed.

“Alena was Markus’s mate?” Lora gasped. “I can’t believe it.”

Azriel nodded solemnly. “Yes. She discarded her mate bond with Alpha Alex in favour of Markus,

but in the end, she ended up rejected by both Markus and Alex. But she received her punishment for what they did to you as she was demoted to an omega.”

Lora felt a wave of relief wash over her. “I’m glad that part of the nightmare is over. But I still want to keep my current identity. I don’t want anything to do with the Black Forest pack or its members.”

Azriel nodded in agreement. “I understand. And it’s your decision. But there’s something else, Lora,

something concerning my sister Kaia.”

Lora’s expression turned serious. “What happened?”

Azriel explained the situation with Kaia’s coma, how she was saved by Markus, how she was kept

alive only by machines, and the desperate need to find a way to help her.

Lora stood up abruptly, her determination clear. “Where is she? I need to see her. Maybe I can help.”

Azriel quickly followed her. “Are you sure you’re up for this? You just woke up.”

Lora nodded resolutely. “I have to try, Azriel. If there’s even the slightest chance I can help her, I

need to do it.”

Azriel nodded his head as they rushed to the infirmary, where Kaia lay in her bed, surrounded by the

hum of medical equipment.
