As Azriel took the call from Markus, he immediately sensed the heaviness in his friend’s tone.

Concern etched across his face, he asked, “Why are you not okay, Markus? What’s going on?”

Markus sighed deeply at the other end of the line. “Azriel, there’s so much to tell. It all started when

I visited the Back Forest Pack and found out that Alena, Lora’s sister, was my fated mate.”

Azriel’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, but he remained silent, letting Markus continue

“She was…she was an opportunist,” Markus explained, his voice filled with a mix of anger and

sadness. “She discarded her mate bond with Alpha Alex without a second thought, hoping to

secure her position with me and become the next Queen. It was disgusting. I rejected her, and the judgment in Elora’s case was harsh. Alena and her accomplice, Danielle, were exposed for their heinous acts. Alena was demoted to an omega, got rejected by her chosen mate as well and lost her wolf, and Alex, her chosen mate, was put on probation, his alpha status stripped.”

Azriel felt a pang of sadness for his friend. “I’m so sorry you had to go through that, Markus. It sounds like a nightmare. I know for how long you waited to meet your fated mate. My heart breaks for you, but don’t despair and lose your faith.”

“It was,” Markus agreed, his voice heavy. “And now, I feel like an empty shell. I waited so long for my mate, and to find out she was so corrupt, so wrong…it shattered me. I always followed the Moon Goddess, but I feel that there is no more hope for me. I had already told my parents that I would proceed with a chosen mate.”

“Markus, just have a bit more patience. Don’t rush it as maybe now you will get a worthy second chance.” Azriel tried to argue with him, but his advice landed on deaf ears.

“I am almost one century old, Azriel! Being royal is not easy, especially with the Council circling us like vultures. You know that duty comes before everything and till now I have kept the mate topic on hold. But, I can’t anymore, Az. I am exhausted, drained, emotionally and physically. I will find a decent she-wolf that can understand me and lead me next to me for the well-being of this realm. I can’t wait any longer.”

Azriel remained silent, allowing Markus space to process his emotions.

“And there’s more,” Markus continued after a pause. “There have been reports of pandemic

outbreaks. Two other packs have reported the same symptoms that Lora healed. For now, the

cases are contained, but it’s becoming increasingly worrying. We need to find the cause.”

Azriel’s mind raced with the implications. A pandemic was a serious threat to all packs, to their

entire kind.

“And then there’s the Council,” Markus added, his tone bitter. “Especially Alpha Carter. He’s becoming unbearable and demanding, pushing for more control and questioning my decisions. Especially after the fiasco with his daughter, Alice, and his failed attempt to become your Luna.”

Azriel’s jaw tightened. He knew Alpha Carter’s reputation for being power-hungry and manipulative. “Markus, we can’t let him undermine your authority. We need to stand strong together.”

“Agreed,” Markus said. “But it’s not just about me. It’s about all our packs. We need unity now more

than ever.”

Azriel nodded, even though Markus couldn’t see him. “You’re right. We need to address these outbreaks first and ensure our packs are safe. Then we can deal with the Council.”

“Thank you, Azriel,” Markus said, his voice softening. “Your support means a lot. How’s Lora, by the way? Is she okay? How’s your son?”

Azriel smiled, despite the serious conversation. “Lora’s doing well. Last night, a miracle happened, and the Moon Goddess gave her a second chance and a second wolf. She shifted for the first time, and her wolf is incredibly powerful. Her new wolf, Tara, is actually Alena’s former white wolf. It’s a complicated situation, but she’s adapting.”

Markus seemed momentarily taken aback. “That’s incredible. The Moon Goddess must have great plans for her. We’ll need her strength in the times ahead.”
