Autumn burst out laughing. She couldn’t help herself. She leaned over and kissed the little boy on the cheek before handing him back to his mother, who had come running over in a panic to find him.
“Thank you! Thank you so much!” The boy’s mother was so overwhelmed she almost hugged Autumn.
Autumn quickly stopped her. “It’s hard enough for kids to survive in the apocalypse. Just be more careful from now on.”
“Yes, Ma’am! I will!”
“Go on.” Autumn slipped a bag of beef jerky into the little boy’s arms, then turned and walked away.
The little boy stood there, watching her disappear into the distance. At only four years old, he already saw her as someone he could only look up to. She would stay in his heart for the rest of his life.
After checking every hilltop and making sure the sand barriers were firmly secured, Autumn spun around and ran back.
The sandstorm had already caught up to her. Sand pelted her face and body, each grain stinging like a tiny needle.
She ignored the pain, wrapped her scarf tightly over her nose and mouth, and sprinted as fast as she could.
Just before the rolling sandstorm swallowed her whole, she threw herself into a forward roll and dove into the cave.
The heavy door slammed shut behind her, sealing the raging storm outside.
The roaring wind hurled waves of sand against the doors and windows. The pounding echoed through the shelter with loud,
relentless thuds.
“This wind has to be close to a Level 10, doesn’t it?” someone asked nervously.
“Pretty much,” someone else replied. “Good thing our base was ready. If we’d been caught out in the open, the wind would’ve blown us away.”
“What about the people living outside the base?”
A heavy silence settled over the room.
At a time like this, whether you lived or died came down to fate… and luck.
Everyone understood it now. If you wanted to survive the apocalypse, you had to stick together. There was only hope if people stood together.
No one could survive alone.
Autumn returned to the cave, brushed the sand off her clothes, and spat out several mouthfuls of grit.
“That sandstorm came out of nowhere,” David said worriedly as he carried in a tray of food. “How’s anyone supposed to survive in weather like this?”
“You survive however you can.” Autumn rinsed the grit from her mouth, sat down, and dug into her meal. Between bites, she said, “Honestly, this sandstorm isn’t all bad. It’s about time those mutated animals and plants got a taste of Mother Nature. Maybe it’ll knock them down a peg instead of letting them strut around like they own the place.”

David thought about it for a moment. She actually had a point.

Leonel came in from outside. Seeing Autumn in the middle of her meal, he decided not to interrupt and waited until she was finished.
“So, what is it?” Autumn asked after polishing off a big plate of barbecue pork ribs with mashed potatoes and gravy, plus a serving of roast chicken and dinner rolls. She patted her stomach with complete satisfaction.
“The central shelter is sending representatives over to hold formal trade talks with us,” Leonel said. “What do you think? Should we do business with them?”
“Why wouldn’t we?” Autumn shot back. “How many people are still left in the central shelter?”
“Counting the survivors outside the city, a little over 12 million,” Leonel replied. “Ever since the mutated animals and plants wiped out nearly half the shelter last time, those rich folks finally learned their lesson. They’ve become a little more human. They’re letting the survivors outside the walls come in and take shelter now.”
Autumn let out a cold snort. “They’re only scared those refugees outside will end up as food and breeding grounds for the mutated creatures, who’ll grow stronger and come back to eat them next. They’re nothing but cowards. So who’s coming this time? And what do they want to trade for?”
“They want the phosphorus powder we just developed. After people saw how well it worked, buyers started showing up from everywhere. Word reached the central shelter, and now they want it too. According to the rules, they’ll pay in gold.” Leonel suddenly smiled.
The smile sent a chill down Autumn’s spine.
