David grumbled. “Every time you go out, you come back worn out like this. You’re a girl, not some tough guy. Why do you always bush yourself this hard?”

Autumn just chuckled without explaining.

After eating her fill, she went to see Scott.

Autumn said, “I brought back a lot of ships, spare parts, steel plates, and other steel materials. Have your people inspect everything. Fix what needs fixing and patch up whatever’s damaged. The ships are too big, so I’ll quietly take them out of my storage space tonight. Have your team remodel them. Get rid of all the bars, lounges, and other entertainment areas they used to have. Turn every bit of that space into regular rooms. The more people we can fit, the better.”

‘All right.” Scott looked her over carefully before asking, “You didn’t run into any serious danger this time, did you?”

‘It was… fine, I guess,” Autumn answered, stumbling over her words. “Come on, it’s the apocalypse. Running into danger is pretty 1ormal, isn’t it?”

Scott didn’t lecture her the way he had before. He knew everything Autumn did out there was for the sake of the base. None of it

vas easy.

He simply said, “Take care of yourself. Stay safe. Don’t make your family worry.”

Autumn suddenly fell silent.

The words stirred something inside her.

Family.

What a strange, unfamiliar word.

Just then, Leonel walked over. When he saw Autumn, he gave her a nod and asked, “Got a minute? Come have some coffee with

ne.”

t was obvious he had something to discuss.

Autumn nodded. After leaving another pile of supplies with Scott, she headed to Leonel’s room.

The moment she walked in, Leonel got straight to the point. “Beckett told me you ran into some kind of flower on this trip. He said t even talked to you?”

Autumn sighed. “He really tells you everything, doesn’t he? Yeah, we ran into a corpse flower. It even declared war on me.”

“You sure you didn’t eat any mushrooms?” Leonel leaned back with a doubtful look on his face. “You’re telling me it wasn’t a hallucination?”

Autumn rolled her eyes at him. “No!”

Leonel’s expression turned serious. “Then this is a big problem. If plants have evolved intelligence, then mutant animals probably have too. That means humans no longer have the upper hand. We’re already barely hanging on. If mutant animals and plants keep getting smarter, do humans even have a chance?”

Autumn replied, “Why wouldn’t we still have the advantage? We know how to store food, grow crops, and develop new technology.

Even if mutant plants and animals become intelligent, it’ll still take them thousands of years to catch up to humans. By then, we might already be traveling through-space.”

Leonel thought about it for a moment and nodded “I guess that’s not impossible.”

Autumn said, “So what are you worrying about? I’m not worried. Natural disasters don’t play favorites. Everything suffers. Why should humans be the only ones suffering? Mutant plants and animals probably have it even worse. We can hide in caves during a tornado. What are they supposed to do? The bigger they are, the harder they get hit.”

“Huh. Good point.” Leonel finally relaxed. He looked at Autumn with a teasing smile. “Autumn, I didn’t know you actually used your brain for once!”

Her answer was an apple thrown straight at him.

Autumn said seriously, “I think what we should be worried about now are sandstorms and tornadoes. Mutant plants and animals aren’t our biggest problem right now. On this trip, I saw that the outside world has basically been destroyed by acid rain. One strong wind could turn everything into a disaster.”

Leonel became serious as well. “You’re right. I’ll go talk to Mr. Marsh right now. We need to reinforce every door and window.”

Autumn said, “The materials I brought back this time are perfect for that. Let’s hope we can make it through.”

Scott worked fast. He immediately had the steel Autumn brought back melted down and, using old-fashioned forging methods, turned it into doors, windows, and sand barriers.

There was no other choice. After the acid rain, all the world’s automated factories were gone. Traditional craftsmen had suddenly become highly valuable.

Things that used to be cheap were now in high demand.

In Aurora Base, anyone who could bring a complete marriage package was considered a real catch-a full bedding set, a full dining set, a full hygiene set, and 400 points. Matchmakers would practically line up at their door to introduce them to potential partners.

Even with such limited resources, Scott still managed to make doors and windows for every cave in just three days. That was impressive enough to be proud of.

The day after everything was installed, Autumn stood on the mountaintop, staring into the distance.

Suddenly, her body stiffened. She spun around and shouted at the top of her lungs, “Everyone, get back into the caves! Now! A sandstorm is coming!”

The next second, a wall of yellow sand appeared on the horizon, rushing toward them.
