Chapter 247 The Hungry Thing on the Wall

“What… Got it!” The bodyguard quickly caught on.

Autumn’s group encountered the same black moss.

“Careful. That thing’s alive.” Autumn raised a hand to stop the others and cautiously moved closer. “Look. It’s breathing.”

“Is it an animal or a plant?” Beckett studied it for a long moment but still couldn’t tell.

“It might be some kind of mutant moss,” someone said. “Maybe it’s evolved into something between a plant and an animal.”

“I’ve never seen anything like it.” The expert stepped closer for a better look. “There’s nothing like this in any of the records either.”

“No, there is something similar,” Autumn said. “Flesh mold.”

The others immediately understood.

“But flesh mold isn’t this color,” someone pointed out.

“It’s the apocalypse. Animals and plants have mutated beyond recognition, so why couldn’t flesh mold mutate too?” someone countered.

Autumn nodded. “Messing with flesh mold brings nothing but trouble. So let’s stay away from it.”

Autumn was about to lead everyone quietly away when they heard people fleeing frantically from the opposite direction. The flesh mold, which had been resting motionless against the wall, suddenly seemed to awaken and rapidly crawled toward the

commotion.

“What happened over there?” Beckett asked in surprise. “Don’t tell me one of those two groups provoked it. How stupid would they have to be?”

“Hard to say.” Autumn immediately backed away. “Move, move, move. While they’re distracting it, we’ll slip through unnoticed.”

Several of Beckett’s men grinned at the same time.

They loved it whenever Autumn slipped past danger while someone else drew all the attention.

It was a rush every time.

Autumn and the others turned and ran, completely unaware that the flesh mold behind them slowly formed a distorted smiling face on the wall, as though it were watching them leave.

Perhaps the commotion near the main burial chamber was so intense that Autumn’s route remained unusually quiet. Anything nearby had probably been drawn toward the noise.

Autumn’s group soon reached the entrance to the secondary burial chamber.

The expert hurried forward and examined the wall and sealed stone door. “This chamber has been opened before, but the structure is still perfectly intact. Whoever entered must have had a key. Otherwise, the walls and stone door wouldn’t have remained undamaged. Judging by the traces, it was last opened around ten years ago.”

Autumn gave the expert an approving look.

His stamina might be terrible, and he might have slowed them down, but an expert was still an expert. He could spot things the rest of them would never notice.

“Where are we supposed to find the key?” Autumn thought for a moment. “What are our chances of getting out safely if we blast the door open?”

The expert replied, “This tomb has several layers or protection. Forcing the chamber open would trigger a chain reaction and destabilize the structure. We’d be buried underground almost instantly. On top of that, the acid rain has weakened the foundation above us. Even a small explosive charge could cause a collapse if it exceeds the structure’s limit. The door might still be standing when we’re buried alive. None of the old calculations apply anymore.”

“But Keith’s group may not consider any of that,” Beckett said. “They’ll do whatever it takes to blast open the main burial chamber. Autumn, we don’t have much time. We need to decide now.”

The expert added, “If they breach the main chamber with explosives, the shock will affect us too. This area could start collapsing within five minutes. Once the chain reaction begins, every chamber in the tomb will collapse within ten.”

Autumn immediately nodded. “Ten minutes isn’t enough for any of us to get out.”

“So we just give up?” someone asked unwillingly. “We went through all that trouble to get here.”

“We’re not giving up.” Autumn looked thoughtful. “We just need another way in.”

Beckett saw her eyes darting around and knew she already had an idea.

‘Tell us what you need. We’ll help,” Beckett said.

“Do you think that wall of mutant flesh mold has developed intelligence?” Autumn asked, seemingly changing the subject entirely.

“Even if it has, why would it help us?” someone asked. “You can’t seriously expect it to open the door for us. That’s impossible.”

Autumn bit the inside of her cheek, then said something none of them could quite believe. “Didn’t any of you hear the flesh mold talking?”

Every man there froze in shock.

Beckett reacted quickly and immediately thought of the enormous corpse flower.

Can this flesh mold communicate through brain waves too?

“Autumn, are you saying it spoke to you?” Beckett asked, his voice trembling.

Autumn shook her head. “Not exactly, but I think I heard it saying it was hungry… over and over.”

They exchanged uneasy looks. “It doesn’t want to eat people, does it?”
