Adele finally managed to pull herself together from her crying and immediately stepped forward to second the sentiment. "Josiah is right. Mom, you still have us."
Adele was fiercely decisive, effortlessly adopting the title as well.
Paula choked on a fresh wave of sobs.
In truth, she still had Lara, Caleb's sister.
But Caleb was the only son. Originally, having both a son and a daughter meant their family was complete and perfect.
But now...
Sharon, however, didn't change how she addressed her, nor did she... dare to. There was actually a sliver of genuine terror in her heart.
She was terrified because Caleb had volunteered for the Peacekeeping Corps right after she had posted a picture of a comic book character she liked on social media, captioning it about how much she adored heroes. It had riled him up enough to make the jump.
Because of that, standing in front of Paula and Reuben right now, she felt an inexplicable sense of dread.
But her sorrow far outweighed her fear.
The Fletcher family had always treated her incredibly well. Perhaps because Caleb had loved her so much, Paula had always been very affectionate toward her.
In the past, she had stated multiple times at banquets with other elders that she desperately hoped Sharon would become her daughter-in-law.
Even though the two never ended up together and eventually married other people.
Paula never held a grudge against her. She continued to treat her with the same warmth and closeness.
One could even argue that Paula treated her better than she treated her actual daughter-in-law, Emeline.
She likely understood her son's true feelings.
Because of this, Sharon's current situation was the most agonizing, awkward, and delicate of them all.
Which led to the fact that, despite being overwhelmed with grief and having a thousand things she wanted to say—especially remembering Hayley's advice to properly comfort his parents—in this exact scenario...
She was genuinely terrified that breathing a single wrong word would be a catastrophic mistake.
York finally spoke up. "If you need anything at all, please don't hesitate to contact me. No matter what it is, I will do absolutely everything in my power to make it happen."
York glanced over, his expression darkening slightly, but he didn't say anything.
At a time like this, it was perfectly normal for the men to group together and the women to do the same.
Josiah, who was standing beside Paula and Reuben, also threw a quick glance their way before retracting his gaze and checking the time on his wrist.
The military transport was due any minute.
Flossie and Sharon came to a stop just as Adele caught up.
Flossie reached out to grab Adele's hand as well, lowering her voice to speak directly to Sharon. "Don't worry. Lamont will absolutely stop Emeline from moving into your house. Seriously, Emeline is a piece of work. Is she seriously expecting to shack up at your place?"
"Even if she doesn't want to stay with the Monroe family and be with her parents, surely staying at her own brother's house is perfectly acceptable, right? I'll be the one to stay by her side and take care of her. I guarantee I'll keep her healthy and glowing. It's only natural for a future sister-in-law to take care of her. I can handle her eating, drinking, and everything in between. Bottom line: I'm here, so stop stressing."
After finishing her speech, Flossie patted Sharon's hand comfortingly.
Sharon felt incredibly moved. First, she had Adele and Josiah fiercely defending her, completely willing to go head-to-head with York to protect her.
