In that moment, she looked like a complete mess, with splashes of dark wine staining her face and hair.
Yet, that shattered, vulnerable appearance was visually captivating. Sharon had thick, beautiful hair that cascaded perfectly down to her narrow waist. With her stunning face now looking so exquisitely broken, the sight was intensely striking.
And her long, flowing hair... was precisely the style York preferred.
Emeline also had long, perfectly straight hair just like this.
Sharon was still caught in a daze, only registering the gentle friction of the man's thumb caressing her palm.
A moment later, York suddenly raised his other hand. He reached out and tucked the loose strands of hair behind her ear, completely ignoring the sticky wine soaking them.
Sharon froze.
Before she could process it, his fingers brushed against her cheek, wiping away the lingering tears and the messy droplets of wine.
A sharp, painful lump formed in Sharon's throat. She opened her mouth, wanting to say something. But her mind drew a complete blank.
Just moments ago, York had explicitly said "Yes" to bringing Emeline home, leaving her utterly speechless. But now, he was doing this?
Before Sharon could find her voice, York pulled his hand back and spoke first. "You've made your scene, and you've thrown your temper tantrum. It's enough. Go wash up and get some sleep. Take some medicine if your stomach is bothering you. We have to wake up early tomorrow."
If his earlier actions had sparked an uncontrollable flutter in Sharon's chest, his reminder about "waking up early" instantly extinguished every pathetic ounce of hope she had left.
Sharon let out a cold laugh. "So after all that, you're still just terrified of being late to pick up Emeline."
York didn't respond.
Suddenly, Sharon stopped in her tracks and turned back to face him.
York was watching her. It seemed he hadn't taken his eyes off her since she turned around. There was confusion in his gaze, but the moment she looked back, his expression shifted into a look of 'I knew it.'
He was dressed in a meticulously tailored, ultra-luxurious dress shirt and trousers, his fitted vest perfectly accentuating his broad-shouldered physique. Standing amidst the wreckage, he practically oozed magnetism.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out his cigarettes and lighter, and lit one. Tilting his head slightly, he looked at her through the smoke. "Sharon, I gave you an out. Don't make this so ugly that neither of us can walk away with any dignity. We're adults. Act like one."
Sharon took a step back and laughed, tears shining in her eyes. "Your 'outs' are far too expensive for me. I can't afford them, and I don't want them. All I want to say is, since I'm clearly standing in the way of you two, I'll step aside. I wish you both a lifetime of happiness."
She turned around and walked away for good, her spine inexplicably straight, her hand instinctively resting over her stomach.
*I'm so sorry, baby. I... really tried my best.*
