Married to the Billionaire Who Betrayed Me novel Chapter 228

Chapter 228 Crashing Through The Federal Roadblock

The burner phone cast a harsh white glare across the dark cabin of the truck. I stared at the screen. The financial ticker scrolled at the bottom of the news feed. The numbers bled red.

Federal Prosecutor Sterling made his move. He did not wait for the morning bell. He filed the RICO injunction under the cover of night.

I navigated to the Johnston Group secured banking portal. I typed my encrypted sequence. A gray dialog box appeared. Assets Frozen. Federal Warrant 904.

I swallowed the dry lump in my throat. I opened a new tab. I routed my connection through a proxy server and tried my personal offshore trust. The money I hid in the Cayman Islands. The funds I swore I would never need.

Access Denied.

Sterling severed the arteries of our empire. Every property deed. Every corporate account. Every shell company. The federal government seized the Johnston

billions in a single coordinated strike. He stripped us bare. Yesterday, I commanded boardrooms and dictated global market shifts. Today, I possessed the dirt

on my shoes and the stolen truck surrounding us.

The accounts are dead,” I said. My voice sounded hollow.

Tristan kept his hands locked on the steering wheel. His knuckles strained against the skin. Diego sat in the passenger seat, a loaded rifle resting across his

knees. The boat plan failed. The Coast Guard swarmed the cove ten minutes after we ran. Diego brought Elias to the secondary extraction point, and we

crammed into the rusted vehicle.

I looked down. Elias slept with his head resting on my lap. He clutched his plastic airplane. His small chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm. He did not

understand the word fugitive. He did not know his mother lost the world.

*Sterling mapped the dark money,” I continued. I locked the phone screen. “He knew the exact routing numbers to freeze the offshore accounts. He

possessed our entire financial blueprint.”

“We do not need the money right now,” Tristan stated. His tone held iron. “We need distance.”

The truck engine whined as we climbed a steep dirt road. The headlights cut through the thick forest canopy. We needed to reach the state line. We needed

to break the federal perimeter.

A sudden flash of crimson and blue illuminated the tree trunks ahead.

Tristan slammed his boot on the brake pedal. The truck skidded on the loose gravel. He threw the transmission into park.

“Roadblock, Diego hissed.

Through the windshield, a barricade of armored federal vehicles blocked the two-lane highway. Uniformed agents stood behind the metal doors. They held tactical rifles. They swept the tree line with high-powered flashlights. Sterling anticipated our route. He deployed a net to catch his prey.

Elias stirred on my lap. He opened his eyes.

“Mommy?” he whispered. The flashing lights reflected in his dark eyes.

“Stay quiet, baby,” I murmured. I pressed my hand against the back of his head, guiding his face into my stomach. I shielded him from the sight of the men hunting us.

Tristan did not-panic- The Johnston titan died, but the underworld survivor thrived. He assessed the threat. He calculated the odds.

‘Four vehicles. Eight men, Tristan mapped the perimeter. He turned his head and looked at the dense brush bordering the dirt road. “The tree line is too thick for the truck. If we reverse, we expose pur position to the highway cameras.”

“We go on foot, Diego suggested. He chambered a round.

‘No, Tristan commanded. “Elias cannot outrun a tactical team in the dark. We break the line.”

Tristan shifted the truck into drive. He reached under the dashboard and ripped a cluster of wires loose. The headlights died. The dashboard went dark. We sat in pitch black.

*Hold him tight,” Tristan told me.

I wrapped both arms around Elias. I braced my boots against the floorboard.

Tristan pressed the accelerator. The truck lurched forward in the dark. He steered the heavy vehicle off the dirt path. We crashed into the thick brush. Branches scraped against the metal doors. The noise sounded like tearing steel. Tristan ignored the designated road. He relied on his lethal instincts to navigate the blind terrain.

We paralleled the federal barricade. The truck bounced over exposed roots and deep mud ruts. My teeth rattled. I crushed Elias against my chest to absorb the impact.

A spotlight pierced the canopy. The beam hit the hood of our truck.

“They spotted us,” Diego warned.

‘Brace, Tristan roared.

He spun the steering wheel. He floored the gas pedal. The truck tore through a cluster of dead pines and launched over a steep embankment. We hit the asphalt of the highway yards beyond the federal barricade. The impact shattered the suspension. Sparks flew from the undercarriage.

Shouts echoed from the roadblock behind us. Gunfire popped in the distance. The bullets missed our vehicle. Tristan kept his foot pinned to the floor. The broken truck screamed down the empty highway, leaving the federal agents in the dust.

We drove for another hour before the engine died. Smoke poured from the hood. Tristan steared the dying truck into the rusted shell of an abandoned warehouse. We parked in the shadows of the collapsing tin roof.

Diego exited the vehicle first. He secured the perimeter of the empty building.

I climbed out of the backseat. I carried Elias in my arms. He buried his face in my neck, exhausted and shivering from the night air.

Tristan opened a heavy metal door leading to a small, windowless office space inside the warehouse. The air smelled of concrete dust and rot. It offered zero comfort, but it offered walls.

“Put him on the cot, Tristan directed. He pointed to a decaying mattress in the corner.

I laid Elias down. I took off my heavy jacket and draped it over his small body. I kissed his forehead. He fell asleep the moment his eyes closed.

Diego stood in the doorway. “I will take the roof. I have a visual on the access road.”
