Chapter 262 Finally Safe With Our Son

The black SUV tires crush the gravel of the driveway. The iron gates of the coastal house slide shut behind us. The heavy metallic clang echoes in the damp air. The federal hunt is dead. The war is a closed file.

The drive from the Johnston estate took two hours. We did not speak. The silence in the car carried the wreckage of Tristan’s family. We walked into Evelyn Johnston’s mansion. We dropped the Geneva ledger on her datique dining table. We offered her a choice. Sign over her voting shares and surrender her assets, or face the federal marshals for funding a terrorist raid against her own grandson.

She signed. Her hands shook. The ink smeared on the paper. She wept. I felt zero pity. We walked out and left her in an empty house. She possessed no money. She possessed no influence. We purged the poison from the roots.

Tristan kills the engine. We sit in the dark cabin for a long moment. The tension of the past week begins to bleed out of my muscles.

We exit the vehicle. The ocean breeze hits my face. The salt clears the stench of the Capitol marble and the Swiss chateau.

Tristan unlocks the front door. We step inside.

The coastal house is quiet. The lights burn low in the living room. Diego stands near the hallway. He holds a rifle across his chest. He sees us. The hard lines of his face relax. He lowers the weapon. He nods. A silent confirmation of our survival.

I drop the black leather briefcase on the console table. I do not care about the documents right now. I care about the boy in the next room.

I walk past Diego. I turn the corner.

Elias sits on the living room rug. He wears his blue pajamas. He snaps two plastic wings onto a model airplane body. He focuses on the toy. He does not know his mother dismantled a corrupt political machine today. He does not know his father scaled a stone wall in Europe to keep him safe.

He hears my footsteps. He looks up.

His dark eyes widen. A massive smile breaks across his face. He drops the plastic airplane.

‘Mommy!’ he yells.

He scrambles to his feet. He runs across the hardwood floor.

I drop to my knees, I hold my arms open. He crashes into my chest. The impact knocks me back a few inches. I wrap my arms around his small body. I bury my face in his dark hair. I hold him tight.

The lingering fear evaporates. The cold void in my chest fills with heat. He is warm. He breathes. He is safe. Sterling did not touch him. Evelyn did not reach him. I hold the only thing in the world that matters.
