Chapter 191 Tracing the Syndicate Origin Account
‘I can smell the lie on your skin, said.
Tristan stopped. He stood in the center of the penthouse bedroom. He held a black jacket in his hands. The city lights outside the window offered the room a cold, distant glow.
‘I am going to the docks, Tristan said. His voice lacked emotion. Silas needs a face-to-face meeting to confirm the blind eye at the port. It is a standard protocol for underworld transactions.”
“Marcus can handle the physical meeting,” I stated. I sat on the edge of the mattress. My chest felt tight. “You are the former CEO. You do not run errands for information brokers in the middle of the night.”
“Silas asked for me.”
‘Look at me and say it.”
Tristan turned. His gray eyes met mine. He did not blink. He held my gaze with terrifying ease.
“Silas asked for me,” he repeated.
The lie was flawless. It lacked hesitation. It lacked guilt. That was the most terrifying part of this conversation. I spent three years married to a man who manipulated global markets. I knew his tells. Tonight, he hid them all. But I felt the shift.
“Take Marcus with you,” I said.
‘I am going alone. A security detail spooks men like Silas.”
He slipped his arms into the jacket. He checked his pockets.
‘Come back to me,” I told him.
“Always, he promised.
He crossed the room and pressed his lips to my forehead. His kiss felt like an apology. He walked out of the bedroom. The heavy oak door clicked shut.
I sat in the silence. The digital clock on the nightstand read eleven. One hour remained until the port opened for Silas’s ghost (hipment.
I stood up and walked to the closet. I pulled on a pair of dark trousers and a thick sweater. I left the penthouse and walked down the hall to the war room.
Ricardo sat at the glass table. The monitors cast a green light over his tired face. Empty coffee cups littered the space around his keyboard.
“Did you find the proxy?” I asked.
Ricardo jumped. He rubbed his eyes. ‘No. The money moves through a dozen encrypted relays before it hits the syndicate. I need more time.”
“Where is Marcus?”
“He took a perimeter shift. Ricardo pointed to a small screen displaying the building’s security feeds. He is walking the underground garage.”

Tooked at the garage feed. Concrete pillars and parked cars filled the frame. I observed no movement.
“Bring up the feed for the front lobby,” I commanded.
Ricardo tapped a key. The screen swished to the marble lobby. Tristan walked through the glass doors. He stepped into the night.
‘He went to meet Silas, Ricardo noted.
‘Did he take a company car?”
“No. He requested a ghost vehicle. Untraceable plates. No GPS.”
“Track his phone,” I ordered.
Ricardo frowned. “Mina, he is meeting a broker. We should not trace his signal. If Silas runs a counter-surveillance sweep and detects our ping, he kills the
deal. We lose the name.”
‘Track the phone, I repeated. The cold instinct in my chest spread to my throat. “Do it.”
Ricardo sighed. He opened a new window and entered Tristan’s private number. A loading bar appeared. It vanished a second later. A red error message replaced the bar.
Signal Lost.
‘He turned it off,” Ricardo said. “Or he left it in a dead zone.”
‘He disabled it, I corrected.
Tristan Johnston did not make mistakes. He removed his digital footprint. He went off the grid. He did not do that for a simple face-to-face meeting with an
information broker. He did that to hide his path from me.
I turned away from the monitors. I pulled my own phone from my pocket. I dialed Marcus.
“Mina,” Marcus answered. His voice echoed, bouncing off the concrete walls of the garage.
“Get the SUV, I said. “We are going for a ride.”
“Where?”
“To the docks.”
Ten minutes passed. I sat in the passenger seat of the armored vehicle. Marcus drove through the empty city streets. Rain began to fall. The drops hit the
windshield with a heavy, rhythmic beat.
“Tristan ordered me to keep you in the penthouse, Marcus said. He kept his eyes on the road.
“I am the Chairman,” I reminded him. “I sign your checks. You answer to me.”
Marcus gripped the steering wheel. He understood the hierarchy. He respected Tristan, but his ultimate loyalty belonged to the woman who pulled Aegis out of the dirt.

The shipping yards loomed ahead. Massive steel containers stacked like a rusted metal maze. Cranes reached into the dark sky like skeletal fingers. The area lacked activity. I dismissed the secury teams hours prior to fulfill the promise to Silas.
“Park behind the warehouse, I instructed.
Marcus guided the SUV into a narrow alley between two brick buildings. He cut the engine, The silence wrapped around us.
“Wait here, I said. I opened the door.
‘I cannot let you walk out there alone, Marcus argued.
“You will stay in the car, I ordered. “If I do not return in twenty minutes, call Ricardo and lock down the building.”
