Gavin remained silent.
He knew Hudson had a point.
If Evangeline truly remembered what her mother, Felix, had left her, she would have returned to the Fairchilds or the Vaughns years ago. She wouldn't have stayed off the grid for decades.
Seeing Gavin's grim silence, Hudson raised an eyebrow, his tone turning cryptic. "But then again, hasn't Evangeline Fairchild been found? You can just go investigate her yourself. Why come to me?"
Gavin shot him a cool glance. "You think I haven't tried?"
They had thoroughly swept Evangeline's current residence and everywhere she had been, turning up absolutely nothing.
He had theorized that given Felix's brilliance, if she had encountered danger, she would have found a foolproof way to hide the data.
And the only foolproof medium would be her own body or her daughter's body.
He had even gone so far as to mandate a full medical examination for Evangeline under the guise of a routine check-up. The doctors inspected every inch of her skin, yet there wasn't a single scar to be found!
Since Evangeline didn't have it, there was only one other explanation.
The data was on Felix herself.
But it had been twenty-five years, and Felix was still missing, presumed dead.
If she were still alive, it would be the perfect resolution.
But if she wasn't...
"You're awake?"
Gavin's thoughts were interrupted by Hudson's voice. He instinctively turned around.
Nora offered a warm, radiant smile. "Good morning, Gavin."
Gavin stood up with a polite smile. "Mrs. Lancaster. My apologies for intruding so early."
"Not at all."
Gavin dropped his smile, looking slightly apologetic. "I heard from Grant that Leo caused quite a bit of trouble for you when he was working under you."
Nora quickly waved her hands. "No, not at all. Leo might be young, but he was actually a big help to me."
Gavin assumed she was just being polite. "If he acts up, don't hesitate to discipline him. There's no need to hold back."
Nora couldn't help but laugh awkwardly. What exactly did the eldest brother think Leo was? Some kind of little demon?
Hudson naturally took Nora's hand, looking back at Gavin. "So, you came all the way out here first thing in the morning just to complain?"
Hearing his tone, Gavin knew Hudson thought he was stalling. "I know you're close to Finnian Fairchild. Can you help me set up a meeting with him?"
"Sure. No problem."
