Hudson let out a low chuckle, his chest vibrating against her skin, sending pleasant shivers through her.
He reached up, his thumb brushing away the thin layer of sweat on the tip of her nose. "Of course I get it. But once we're divorced, we can just get married again. It's no big deal. It's just a formality."
"How is it just a formality?"
Nora couldn't help but glare at him, though the lingering haze in her eyes ruined the intimidating effect. "The legal implications are real. Once we sign those papers, we're officially divorced. We won't be husband and wife anymore."
"Then you can just marry me again, right?" Hudson's tone was entirely nonchalant, yet the gaze he fixed on her carried an intensity bordering on obsession. "Honey, you can't escape me. You were born to be my wife."
"..."
Who was born to be his wife?
How old was she back then?
Too exhausted to bicker with him, Nora simply buried her face back in his chest. "So, what's the plan? Even if we get the divorce certificate, River isn't going to just hand over the Ivory Pill."
"Mhm."
"But if we don't get the certificate, he definitely won't give it to me..."
"Mhm."
Nora lifted her head again, poking him in the chin. "Is 'mhm' all you know how to say? Hurry up and tell me, what other plans do you have?"
Hudson tilted his head away from her poking finger, chuckling as he caught her hand and wrapped it securely in his.
"My methods have always been straightforward and ruthless."
Nora blinked, instantly understanding what he meant. "You mean... kidnap River and interrogate him? Would he actually hand it over if we did that?"
Hudson's tone remained casual. "If he doesn't cough it up, I'll go to his father. If his father refuses, there's always his mother and his older brother. And if none of them cooperate..."
He paused, a fleeting trace of raw brutality flashing through his dark eyes. "Then I'll drag all four of them down to hell with me and take my time asking them."
Nora's heart skipped a beat, and she instinctively slapped her hand over his mouth.
"Don't say things like that."
The dark hostility in Hudson's eyes instantly melted away, replaced by a soft, affectionate amusement.
"Alright, I won't say it."
He tilted his head slightly, pressing a gentle kiss to the center of her palm. His warm lips against her soft skin sent a tingling sensation radiating all the way to her fingertips.
Nora leaned into his embrace, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. She buried her face deeper into his chest, her fingers unconsciously bunching up the fabric of his shirt.
Noticing her restless gesture, Hudson lowered his head, resting his chin on the crown of her hair. "What's wrong?"
Nora took a deep breath. She pushed herself up slightly, looking at him with a hesitant, cautious gaze. "Olive mentioned something to me the other day... She said River has more than just the Ivory Pill. He has something else of yours... That's why you've been so hesitant to strike back... Is it true?"
The room fell utterly silent for several seconds.
