River's expression stiffened for a fraction of a second, but he recovered instantly.
His lips curved into a smooth smile. "You mentioned him before."
"I did?" Leo frowned, racking his brain but coming up completely blank.
"You did," River lied effortlessly. "Last time we were out drinking, you bragged that your brother basically runs San Francisco and nobody dares mess with him."
Leo paused.
He supposed that did sound like something he'd say when he was drunk and full of himself.
"Alright, whatever." Leo scratched the back of his neck, deciding not to dwell on it. He glanced nervously at the men standing across the lobby and made a swift decision. "I'm heading to my room. If Nora asks for me, tell her I'm not feeling well and to count me out for the hot springs tonight."
Without waiting for River's reply, Leo bolted down the hallway, practically sprinting as if his life depended on it.
River stood in place, watching Leo disappear around the corner. The smile on his lips slowly evaporated.
He glanced back at the group chatting casually in the lobby, his eyes locking onto Nora.
Before she could notice his stare, he looked away, turning on his heel and heading toward his room, leaving Nora with nothing but a view of his retreating back.
...
"Nora, here's the key card for the Executive Suite. It's going to get freezing tonight, so you'll have an incredible view of the frost on the trees tomorrow morning. It's the best winter view I've got. Since Hudson rarely makes the trip, I saved the top suite just for you. It has a private hot spring and the absolute best scenery."
Sebastian held out the key card, a teasing smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "I even had this room fully renovated recently. It's totally geared toward... couples. It has amenities the other rooms don't, and the soundproofing is spectacular. Perfect for newlyweds..."
Before Nora could even reach for the card, Hudson snatched it out of Sebastian's hand and flicked him hard on the forehead.
"Are you begging for a beating?"
"What? I'm telling the truth! It really was renovated..."
Hudson shot him a deadpan look. "You've been spending too much time with Grant."
"Hey!" Grant threw his hands up in defense. "Don't drag me into this! Sebastian is a degenerate down to his core. He's been like this since we were kids. This has absolutely nothing to do with me!"
"You're the degenerate!" Sebastian swung a punch at him.
Grant dodged it easily, turning to Nora. "Nora, tell him he's out of line..."
As the group's attention shifted to Nora, Jude's heart gave a sudden lurch. His gaze naturally drifted toward her along with everyone else's.
