Hudson nodded. He wasn't surprised by the outcome in the slightest.
Finnian had always been obsessed with finding his missing sister. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have spent decades relentlessly hunting for her.
Henry Fairchild, on the other hand, had poured all his affection into that adopted daughter. Anyone looking from the outside would assume Liana was the true, blue-blooded Fairchild heiress.
Henry had likely long forgotten that his own flesh and blood was still out there somewhere.
But in the end, it was someone else's family drama.
He was just helping out with the search; he had zero interest in wading into their messy politics.
...
By the time Hudson returned to the living room, the dining area had already been cleared.
Dr. Vane and the others were nowhere to be found. Only Nora remained, sitting on the sofa and scrolling idly through her phone.
Hearing his footsteps, she looked up instinctively, a bright smile instantly blooming on her face. "What were you guys talking about out there? That took a while."
Hudson chuckled softly, taking her hand and tracing her knuckles with his thumb. "We got a small lead on Finnian's missing sister. He's flying in first thing tomorrow morning, so we were going over the details."
"Finnian has really been through it. Searching for over twenty years and never giving up..."
Nora let out a soft sigh. "I really hope he finds her this time."
"Alright, enough worrying about other people's problems. It's late. Let's head upstairs."
"Okay."
Hudson took her hand and led her up the stairs. The thick carpet absorbed their footsteps, leaving the house completely silent.
Nora avoided looking at him, but she could physically feel the weight of his gaze burning into her, making a thin layer of nervous sweat break out on her back.
She had a pretty good idea of what was going to happen once they reached the bedroom. She had witnessed this man's terrifying stamina far too many times...
As her thoughts spiraled, an undeniable urge to retreat kicked in.
Just as they rounded the landing, she bit her lip. "Um, you go ahead to the room. I just remembered I still haven't unpacked..."
But before she could finish her sentence, a strong arm clamped around her waist. Before Nora could even process what was happening, Hudson had pinned her flush against the wall.
"Hudson..."
That was all she managed to gasp before his lips crashed down, swallowing the rest of her words entirely.
He couldn't even wait until they made it to the bedroom!
"Mmph, you..."
Nora's knees went weak under the sheer intensity of his kiss. Her back was pressed against the cold wall, her fingers instinctively curling into the fabric of his shirt until her knuckles turned white.
The stairwell was completely silent, filled only with the ragged sound of their mingling breaths and the desperate rustle of clothing.
After a long, breathless moment, Hudson finally cupped the back of her head, drawing hard on her lower lip one last time before slowly, agonizingly pulling back.
But he kept his lips hovering barely an inch from hers, his chest heaving with heavy, ragged breaths.
