"What... what is happening here?" Nora rushed over immediately.
"Boss, Madam! You're finally back!"
Olive immediately started explaining, gesturing wildly with her hands. "You have no idea! The second I brought the doctor into the yard, the dogs went completely feral and lunged at him. Even Bane couldn't bark them down! I had to drag him all the way into the living room just to stop the pack from tearing him apart."
She pointed down at Dr. Vane's pant leg. "Look! Even the hibernating turtle woke up just to come over here and bite him!"
Nora: "..."
What on earth?
Did Dr. Vane commit mass genocide against the animal kingdom in a past life?
Why was every living creature trying to attack him?
Seeing everyone staring at him, Dr. Vane cleared his throat awkwardly and scratched the back of his head. "Sorry for the mess, sorry for the mess! I've been cursed with this since I was a kid. I don't know what it is, but animals look at me like I murdered their families. They won't stop until they take a bite out of me. When I used to gather herbs in the mountains, I was chased by wild boars, hunted by wolves, and even the squirrels would throw pinecones at my head..."
Nora listened in total disbelief, taking a long moment to process his words. "So... you're naturally despised by all animals?"
"Exactly! A one-in-a-million constitution!" Dr. Vane stroked his beard, a hint of self-deprecating pride in his voice. Nora couldn't help but laugh, though she quickly composed herself and knelt down to help pry the tiny turtle off his pant leg.
The little thing absolutely refused to let go, its tiny legs flailing wildly for several seconds before Nora finally gripped the edge of its shell and gently detached it. She placed it on the coffee table.
It immediately retreated into its shell, then slowly poked its head back out, glancing around as if trying to figure out where it was.
"Doctor, with this condition of yours... having you stay here might be a bit tricky," Nora said, choosing her words carefully. "The dogs listen to Bane, but they completely lost it the second you arrived. If someone leaves a door open one day..."
Dr. Vane waved his hands frantically. "No problem, no problem at all! I'll move out tomorrow. I can just rent a place."
"We couldn't possibly let you do that. You traveled all this way to treat Hudson. We can't just throw you out to find your own place," Nora insisted. "I'll have someone arrange proper accommodations for you. Does that work?"
"Yes, yes, whatever works." Dr. Vane nodded eagerly. "As long as I don't have to sleep in the same zip code as those dogs."
...
Dinner was a lavish affair.
Nora and Olive sat around Dr. Vane, completely engrossed in his wild tales of wandering the world.
The old doctor loved to talk, and his stories were incredibly animated. From deep ancient forests to quiet border towns, from bizarre medical remedies to elaborate street cons, he told his tales with such flair that Olive ended up slamming the table in roaring laughter.
