"Let's go. We're heading to the estate."
After speaking, Hudson gestured toward Olive with his chin. "Olive, take Nora and Dr. Vane back to Cloudwater Estate first."
Olive opened her mouth to agree, but Nora took two quick steps forward and wrapped her arms tightly around Hudson's arm.
"I'm coming too."
Hudson instinctively looked down, meeting her bright, determined eyes.
"He is your uncle, an elder. This is his first time home in decades. Knowing he's here and avoiding him would be terrible manners..."
"My wife doesn't need to worry about manners."
Nora clung to his arm, refusing to let go. "No, I have to go with you."
A small smile touched Hudson's lips. She always seemed so easygoing, but once she made up her mind, absolutely nothing could sway her.
He shifted his hold, weaving his fingers through hers. "Then we go together."
Nora immediately flashed him a sweet, brilliant smile, looking utterly angelic.
Her smile melted the rigid edges of his heart. He reached out and gently tapped the tip of her nose. "Get in the car."
The black Maybach glided out of the private tarmac and merged smoothly into San Francisco's bustling highway traffic.
Neon signs blurred past the windows in an endless stream. Nora leaned back against the leather seat, staring at the rapidly retreating city lights before breaking the silence. "Why did your Uncle Arthur leave all those years ago?"
Hudson rested against the seat, his long legs crossed, his voice calm and detached. "His marriage to Eleanor was a strict business alliance. He actually had someone else he loved at the time, but Grandmother refused to accept her and forced the marriage..."
Nora frowned slightly. "But even so, they went through with it. And they had Tiffany. Why would he still..."
"Grandmother drugged him."
Nora's mouth dropped open in shock. Drugged him?
"Eleanor got pregnant that exact night. Everyone assumed Arthur would just accept his fate, but for some reason, he got into an explosive argument with Grandmother later and completely vanished. He's been gone for over twenty years."
During that time, they kept in touch occasionally, but it was purely surface-level pleasantries.
After all, when Arthur Lancaster II abandoned the family, Hudson had only been seven or eight years old. There was zero genuine affection between them.
For a moment, Nora didn't know what to say.
Even though she hadn't been married into the Lancaster family for long, she knew that Aunt Eleanor was the one who had always taken care of Matriarch Beatrice.
Abandoned by her husband for over two decades, forced to raise her daughter entirely on her own—it was a kind of suffering an outsider could hardly comprehend.
Yet, Arthur had been forced into the marriage from the very beginning, making it hard to condemn him from the moral high ground either.
While Nora was lost in her tangled thoughts, the car slowly pulled up to Lancaster Hall.
