Madly Yours (Nora Reed) novel Chapter 587

Dr. Vane instinctively glanced over his shoulder.

A short distance away stood two pristine rows of bodyguards clad in sharp black suits, standing rigidly at attention. There had to be at least twenty of them, an outrageously extravagant display of power.

The man leading them wore a dark gray overcoat with a fine black cashmere collar, the dark fabric accentuating his strikingly clear complexion and sharp, predatory gaze.

He twirled a pair of sunglasses in his hand, strolling toward them at a leisurely pace.

Dr. Vane blinked in confusion, secretly wondering if this was royalty on a tour, when Hudson's cool voice broke the silence.

"What? Are you in a rush to get back to Chicago? Did the marriage alliance fall through?"

"Marriage alliance, my ass. I'm looking for a partner, not running a charity..."

Vincent Vaughn shoved his sunglasses into his coat pocket and scoffed. "I figured that even if the Fairchilds' adopted daughter was a bit lackluster, she was at least raised by a proper family. She couldn't be too much of a disaster. But no. A physical illness can be cured, but rotten character is terminal."

The Vaughn family was already chaotic enough; he didn't need that adopted nightmare making things worse.

Hudson raised an indifferent eyebrow. "The Fairchilds only have one adopted daughter. If you don't want her, you still have plenty of sisters who are single... And you know the Fairchilds aren't lacking in eligible men."

Not to mention, Finnian had just broken up with his girlfriend.

Finnian was the Fairchild heir. If he ended up marrying any of Vincent's sisters, Vincent's position as the sole heir would be in serious jeopardy.

Vincent rolled his eyes, utterly abandoning his refined image. "Aren't you supposed to be on my oldest sister's side? Why are you warning me about this?"

Hudson chuckled softly. "You actually thought I was warning you? I was just twisting the knife."

Vincent: "..."

Damn it!

When did Hudson get so incredibly toxic?

The man probably didn't even lick his own lips out of fear of poisoning himself.

Vincent pressed his lips into a tight line, his gaze darting toward Arthur and the others standing behind Hudson.

If he wasn't completely outmatched in a fight, he would have totally snapped.

Swallowing his brief surge of anger, he let his eyes roam over Archer before jutting his chin toward Hudson. "You've gotta let me have this bodyguard, right? Name your price... A million dollars, how about it?"

Hudson hadn't budged at half a million last time, but surely a million would get him to agree?

Hudson let out a low laugh. "Ask him. If he says yes, he's yours."

He had finally given the green light!

Vincent's eyes lit up. He immediately threw an arm over Archer's shoulder. "Buddy! Want to come work for me? Name your price!"

Archer glanced at him sideways, then shook his head. "I don't need money."

Thinking Archer was just playing hard to get or angling for a steeper offer, Vincent patted his shoulder with exaggerated generosity. "No need to be shy. How about this: whatever Hudson is paying you, I'll multiply it by ten!"

Archer thought about it very seriously. "The Boss doesn't pay a salary."

Vincent's smile froze. "...What?"

Archer smiled. "We don't need money. The Boss takes care of everything, so we never really have anything to spend it on."
