Sienna met his gaze. "Yes."
It felt as though something had slammed violently into Finnian's chest. A suffocating wave of despair spread through his ribs.
He thought back to everything they had shared over the past six months.
The woman who had relentlessly shamelessly demanded to sleep with him...
The woman who would smile brightly despite being deathly pale after every blood transfusion...
The woman who had cried her heart out on the docks at The Shipyards...
Which parts of it were real, and which parts were just a lie?
"You really played me, Sienna."
His voice was hoarse. He felt as if his spine had been ripped out, the pain so intense that his breathing faltered.
"Leave. Don't ever let me see you again."
Sienna looked at him. Her eyes stung.
But fighting back her tears, she nodded. "Okay."
Without another word, she turned and walked away.
She didn't look back once.
Watching her walk away so decisively, Finnian felt as if an invisible hand was crushing his heart, leaving him completely breathless.
She was really leaving.
If she had just acted like she usually did—if she had whined, playfully begged, or thrown out a few careless jokes—he would have forgiven her.
Finnian closed his eyes. When he opened them, his gaze locked onto the banquet hall doors.
The entrance was completely empty.
He suddenly moved, striding toward the doors.
At first, he walked. Then he walked faster. Finally, he broke into a run.
When he caught sight of her, he crossed the distance in a few massive strides and grabbed her wrist.
Sienna was spun around. Seeing it was him, she froze. Before she could speak, Finnian's ragged voice broke the silence.
"Tell me you were lying!"
Sienna just looked at him, saying nothing.
Finnian's eyes were red. His grip on her wrist tightened involuntarily. "Tell me everything you just said was a lie."
He didn't care what was real and what wasn't. As long as she said it, he would pretend none of this had ever happened!
He would forgive her!
Just say it!
Sienna's eyelashes fluttered. Then, she let out a soft laugh. "Finnian, we had an agreement from the start. I give your sister blood, you let me sleep with you. We both got what we wanted. We don't owe each other anything."
"Be a man and let it go. Acting like this is just going to make me look down on you."
Finnian stared at her for a long second before finally releasing her hand. A humorless laugh escaped his lips. "Is your heart made of stone, Sienna?"
"Finnian, let's just end this on good... Ah!"
Before Sienna could finish her sentence, Finnian suddenly snatched a fruit knife from a nearby table.
