"Not that many." He slammed the accelerator, kicking it up another gear. "Just the ones that matter."
Nora took a deep breath, feeling like every word out of his mouth shaved years off her life.
Still, she finally understood why Vincent traveled with such a massive security detail.
She used to think it was just arrogant posturing.
But now?
Ten bodyguards honestly seemed a little light.
"Hold on, they're going to ram us!"
Nora instantly braced herself, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Crash!
The trailing car slammed into the Rolls-Royce's rear bumper. The violent impact sent a brutal jolt through Nora's spine.
Vincent pinned the gas pedal to the floor and cranked the wheel in a savage swerve. The car jumped the median, barreling into oncoming traffic and leaving their relentless pursuers in the dust.
Vincent instinctively stomped on the brakes to correct their course, but the pedal sank uselessly to the floor.
Driving against the flow of traffic, the car was rapidly losing control.
"Slow down!" Nora yelled, horrified that he was still pushing this kind of speed while driving on the wrong side of the road.
His only response was to drop all four windows at once. The freezing night air blasted into the cabin.
"The brakes are gone."
"What?!" Nora's mind went entirely blank.
She almost thought it was a sick joke, given how utterly unfazed he looked.
"Can you swim?" Vincent looked over at her, his coat collar flapping violently in the gale-force wind whipping through the car.
Nora's ears were ringing. She nodded purely on instinct. "Yes... wait, hold on, what are you doing—"
Vincent's lips curved into a dark smirk. "Perfect. I'm a terrible swimmer. You'll have to save me."
"You—"
Before she could finish the sentence, the Rolls-Royce smashed through the concrete barrier of the riverfront.
"Arthur, someone spotted Vincent's car near the Green Dragon Bridge!"
"Understood."
Arthur looked up, meeting Hudson's eyes in the mirror.
"Mr. Lancaster..." Archer quickly relayed the entire exchange verbatim.
Since Hudson's hearing hadn't fully recovered, he still relied on reading lips.
"Mobilize them," Hudson finally commanded, every word coated in jagged ice. "Call in every single man we have in Chicago. Tear the city apart until you find Nora."
"Yes, sir."
A suffocating silence reclaimed the car.
Hudson closed his eyes. His Adam's apple bobbed as his fingers unconsciously curled into fists, then released.
Nora...
