The meeting ran from two in the afternoon until five.
When it finally concluded, Hudson pulled out his phone, opening his chat with Nora. Just as he was about to type a message, someone patted his shoulder from behind. "Dinner tonight? My treat, to welcome you back."
"You're not eating with the Professor?"
Jude chuckled softly. "How would I ever get a spot at his dinner table?"
Hudson's lips curved slightly. "Just the two of us?"
Jude knew exactly what he meant. If he tried to set up another accidental encounter like last time, Hudson would probably cut ties with him completely.
"Finnian is hosting. He's back in Northampton too. The Fairchild Family has deep roots in the research sector, but the Professor is blocking him from entering..."
Hudson raised an eyebrow. "The Professor still hasn't let go of the grudge over his stolen wife?"
Jude laughed. "You're joking about the Professor's past; aren't you afraid he'll hear you and teach you a lesson?"
The two exchanged knowing smiles, as if returning to their carefree student days.
...
The Gilded Court, a private club owned by the Fairchild Family, was situated near the old city walls of Northampton. From the outside, it looked like an unassuming traditional courtyard with gray walls, green tiles, and crimson doors. There was no sign, only two stone lions standing guard with solemn postures.
If it weren't for the luxury cars parked outside, ordinary passersby would just assume it was an old aristocratic residence.
When Hudson and Jude arrived, Finnian was already waiting at the entrance.
"You two sure took your time. I've been waiting for over an hour..."
Jude smiled. "Can't be helped. We wouldn't dare move until the Professor adjourned the meeting."
Finnian didn't press the matter, stepping aside and gesturing them inside. "Let's go. The food is ready, we were just waiting for you."
Passing through the crimson doors, they were greeted by a brick screen wall carved with an intricate design of pine trees and cranes. The craftsmanship was exquisite—clearly an antique.
Roast duck, braised sea cucumber with scallions, sliced fish in wine sauce, sweet egg pudding, and coriander tripe...
Each dish was a masterpiece that required immense time and effort, clearly prepared well in advance.
"I heard the UK made a big move this time. Our military research factories have been affected too. What does Director Campbell think? Is he going to face them head-on?"
Jude glanced at Hudson before nodding. "The Professor definitely won't compromise. But someone needs to give him the backing to stand his ground."
His words pointed directly at Hudson.
Meanwhile, Hudson was leaning back in his chair, his long legs crossed, sending a text.
[Honey, have you eaten? Do you miss me?]
He waited for half a minute after sending it, but there was no reply.
He sent another one.
