Hudson had been sitting nearby, sporting a fond smile as he watched his wife get showered with praise. Seeing Nora's flustered expression, he immediately stood up, wrapped an arm around her slender waist, and pulled her close.
"That's quite the question to spring on her. Don't scare her away."
Mrs. Lancaster Sr. laughed, mock-scolding him as she pointed a finger in his direction. "You brat. What did I even say? How is that scaring her?"
Hudson's lips curved upward. "Can't help it. My wife is still young and blushes easily."
Mrs. Lancaster Sr. hummed in amusement, her gaze shifting between Hudson and Nora. She couldn't suppress the wide smile on her face.
"Alright, alright, you Wife-obsessed Man. I'll drop it, okay?"
"Okay," Hudson replied, shamelessly accepting the title with total composure as he guided Nora to sit down next to him.
"You really are something..."
The guests attending The Grand Matriarch's Gala were exclusively San Francisco's highest-ranking socialites. Seeing this interaction, their eyes filled with envy as they looked at Nora.
"I had no idea Mr. Lancaster and his wife were so deeply in love..."
"Right? They're practically glowing. It makes everyone else jealous."
"To be honest, Mrs. Lancaster really lucked out. Who knew an arranged marriage meant to ward off bad luck would end up capturing his heart entirely?"
"Exactly. And her good fortune is only just beginning."
Though the whispers were hushed, they still carried over to Jade, who was standing in the corner.
Every single word felt like a sharp needle piercing her ears, causing the veins in her temples to throb violently.
Good fortune?
That was supposed to be her good fortune!
Jade gripped her wine glass so tightly that the veins on the back of her hand bulged dangerously.
Growing up, she had always felt superior to Nora.
Because from the very first time she laid eyes on her, Nora was just the lowly daughter of a former nanny.
Jade violently shook her off, the fire in her chest blazing entirely out of control.
Her eyes locked onto the figure standing at the center of the hall, surrounded by admirers, and she suddenly marched straight toward the middle of the ballroom.
"Jade!" Penelope's face paled as she reached out, but failed to catch her.
Marcus was currently schmoozing with some guests nearby. Catching Jade's movement out of the corner of his eye, his face completely drained of color. He hastily excused himself and sprinted after her.
"Jade! Stop right there!"
Jade didn't stop. In fact, she sped up.
Her stilettos clicked furiously against the marble floor, the sharp, frantic noise drawing even more attention from the crowd.
"What the hell are you doing?!"
Taking a few quick strides, Marcus finally caught up and clamped an iron grip around her wrist, his voice dropping into a furious, gritted hiss. "Are you out of your mind?! Do you know where we are? What do you think you're doing?!"
