He spotted her first.
Eliza had no intention of stopping. She looked away and kept walking.
"Eliza."
He called out to her.
Eliza didn't look back, but her steps halted—not because he called her, but because a luggage cart was blocking the middle of the hallway, temporarily trapping her.
In the three seconds it took to wait for the cart to pass, Zander caught up to her.
His voice was very low, heavy with suppressed emotion:
"Do you know what happened in the lobby today?"
Eliza finally turned her head and looked at him.
"I heard a bit."
"Your brother bumped into Yvonne!" Zander's eyes narrowed sharply. "She's inside getting checked right now! Your mother threw a tantrum on the floor, and your brother hid behind me, making the loan sharks think I was backing him—do you have any idea how terrifying those people are?! Your family—"
He paused, as if trying to find the right words, but ultimately let it all spill out:
"Your family are a bunch of leeches! And you just let them get away with it?! Yvonne has a baby in her stomach right now!"
"That four thousand I gave your brother—he told me he was going to pay off his debts, but he blew it all! He didn't pay back a single dime! He took the money straight to the casino that very night!"
Eliza looked at him without saying a word.
Zander's voice suddenly softened. Realizing he was being too harsh, he dialed back his tone.
He looked at Eliza, then at the floor, his Adam's apple bobbing.
"...I didn't know you grew up in a family like this."
He spoke slowly, sounding as if he was genuinely reflecting on it.
"I thought things were okay at home. Now it seems... it really has been hard for you."
He frowned, a hint of accusation creeping back into his voice: "But why didn't you tell me earlier? We were together for so long, and you never once mentioned your family's situation—"
