Left for Dead Came Back for Everything novel Chapter 15

Only when she saw Gwen did Eliza finally feel like she could breathe again.

The nurse rushed back in, gasping at the sight before quickly tending to Eliza's wound and setting up a new IV.

Eliza let the nurse work without uttering a single sound of pain.

Watching Gwen discreetly wipe her tears while helping the nurse change the stained sheets, Eliza realized she needed to pull herself together. After all, there were still people in this world who genuinely cared for her.

She reached out and gently patted Gwen's back, her voice raspy but astonishingly calm. "It's not your fault, Gwen. Maybe it was just fate giving me another chance to see that family's true colors, and... to see what a joke I've been."

Once the nurse finished and left, only the two of them remained in the room.

Gwen clutched Eliza's hand, staring into her friend's dead, emotionless eyes. A sharp ache pierced her heart.

She knew Eliza too well.

In the past, even when trapped under concrete rubble, even when told she could never dance again, Eliza's eyes had always retained a spark of defiance.

But now, that light was completely extinguished.

"Ellie..." Gwen hugged her tight, choking on her words, completely at a loss.

"Gwen, I really want to leave this place."

Eliza rested her head gently on Gwen's shoulder, her hollow gaze fixed on the dreary rain outside.

This city was too polluted with memories of Zander. Every street and every rainy day only served to endlessly rip open her healing scars.
