The living room plunged into immediate silence.
The designers exchanged awkward glances, quickly lowering their heads and flipping through their sample books to avoid eye contact.
Yvonne perfectly timed her approach, stepping to Harrison's side and gently tugging at his sleeve.
"Dad, please don't be mad... Zander is probably just exhausted from work. Let him rest for a bit."
"Zander, go upstairs and rest. Mom and I can handle all of this. You don't need to worry about a thing."
Eleanor quickly chimed in, "Exactly! You don't have to lift a finger, we'll take care of it all."
She pulled Yvonne back onto the sofa, enthusiastically diving right back into a discussion about the veil length with the designers.
From start to finish, not a single person had asked him—do you even want this wedding.
Zander turned and headed upstairs.
Just as he reached the landing on the second floor, Yvonne's laughter drifted up from below.
"Mom, look at the train on this skirt, isn't it gorgeous?"
Zander froze, his hand gripping the banister so tightly his knuckles turned white.
For some reason, an image suddenly flashed through his mind.
It was from years ago.
The day he and Eliza got married.
It had been such a simple ceremony.
Even her dress—she had bought it herself from an indie designer, using six months of her own saved-up salary.
It was a pure white dress, the hem short enough to just perfectly brush against her slender, graceful calves.
She had stood outside the courthouse, smiling at him.
There was no diamond tiara, no custom fitting, no swarm of designers buzzing around her.
But she was so beautiful—
He still couldn't get the image out of his head.
He closed his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose hard before walking into his bedroom and shutting the door.
