Nora's face grew even paler. That project was the culmination of years of relentless effort. From selecting the initial topic and organizing the literature, to running the experiments and analyzing the data, she had built every single step herself. It was her life's work and the foundational cornerstone of her entire career.
Yet, without a shred of hesitation, Nora stated, "Fine, I agree. As long as you let Cassie go, I'll process my resignation tomorrow. I don't want the project. I'll give it all up."
Her surrender was so instantaneous that Seraphina was caught entirely off guard. She had fully expected Nora to bargain with her and had prepared a whole speech to humiliate her, but now she was left speechless.
Nora hadn't even paused to think before throwing it all away.
Seraphina stared at her in utter disbelief. "Are you serious, Nora?"
Nora's eyes grew red, but her voice remained chillingly steady. "I mean every word. You're a woman too, Seraphina. You should know that nothing in this world is more important to a mother than her child's life. I can rebuild my project. I can find another job. But there is only one Cassie. I don't care what you want me to do. If you want me to slap myself, fine. If you want me to stand up at the general assembly and confess to academic fraud, I'll do it. Just please, don't hurt her!"
For the first time, doubt crept into Seraphina's mind. Could Nora genuinely throw away everything for her daughter?
Listening to the massive sacrifices Nora was so willing to make only magnified Seraphina's own misery.
Nora could give up her degrees, her achievements, and public recognition—because she actually possessed all those things. What did Seraphina have? Absolutely nothing. She couldn't even pull off kidnapping a child without looking pathetic.
A dark, ugly bitterness swamped Seraphina, and her gaze turned venomous. "Shut up! Do you think playing the martyr is going to make me soft? This is exactly what I hate about you! You always act so above it all, so coldly detached, like no one is worthy of your attention. Yet you're the one who got everything! Why?!"
