I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 396

Pure instinct took over as Nora yelled, "Let her go!"

She moved to lunge forward but forced herself to stop dead in her tracks, realizing Seraphina had pulled a pocketknife from her coat.

Nora froze, her eyes widening in sheer horror as her breath hitched. "Don't... don't do anything crazy. Seraphina, calm down! Look, I'm staying right here. Don't think the worst. You don't have nothing! Think about it, Finnegan lied to me for years just to be with you. Cassie used to adore you. You had so many great moments!"

Seraphina paused for a second. But those moments were all stolen; they never belonged to her in the first place.

Clutching Cassie's arm and pointing the trembling knife directly at the girl's throat, Seraphina snapped. "Don't try to pity me! Between the two of us, you're the pathetic one!"

She mumbled something under her breath, completely unaware of the tears now streaming freely down her own face. "Finnegan didn't come. Why didn't he come? Does he really not care about his daughter, or does he just despise me that much?"

Then, she threw her head back and let out a shrill, hysterical laugh that echoed like a phantom through the hollow house.

Nora's voice was shaking, but she forced herself to maintain an anchor of reason. "Calm down, Seraphina. It's not that he doesn't care, he has to be on his way. Just give him a little more time."

Seraphina abruptly aimed the blade at Nora. "Shut up! You're all lying to me! You're all liars!"

Just then, a flurry of heavy footsteps thundered outside. It clearly wasn't just one person.

Seraphina finally realized she had walked into a trap. She frantically scanned the perimeter, spotting dozens of police officers swarming the property.

"Nobody move! You are surrounded!"

Seraphina whipped her head back to glare at Nora, total madness hijacking her features. "You called the cops. I specifically told you not to bring the cops and to come alone! You lied to me!"
