Nora shook her head, overwhelmed with sorrow. She had thought that kind of happiness would last forever—right until the deaths of her mother and older brother stripped it all away, taking with them the father who used to smile at her.
And now, the warm, loving father from her memories lay freezing on a hospital bed, his eyes shut forever, never to speak another word.
She wrapped her arms around his body, pressing her cheek against his icy chest. Her cries tore from her throat, raw and agonizing. "How could you? How could you just abandon me in this world all by myself? I have no family left..."
Even the doctor standing nearby couldn't stop himself from wiping a tear away. He was used to life and death, but scenes like this never failed to strike a chord.
Xander stood behind her, his hands balled into tight fists, his own eyes burning red.
He had never seen Nora like this. She had already endured so much tragedy that he thought she had hit her absolute limit. But it seemed the universe refused to spare her, forcing her to suffer through yet another agonizing loss.
Her sobs gradually weakened, and her body began to slide toward the floor.
Xander rushed forward immediately, catching her in his arms. His brow creased in deep distress. "Nora!"
But Nora's fingers were locked in a death grip on the bedsheets, refusing to let go.
"Nora, let go," he pleaded, his voice thick with emotion.
She refused to listen, so he scooped her entirely off the ground. Even then, she wouldn't loosen her grip. "Put me down! Xander, let me go! I want my dad!"
The moment the last word tore from her lips, she blacked out completely. Xander's face went pale in a heartbeat. "Doctor!"
