I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 483

Nora stared at the doctor. She heard every single word perfectly, but strung together, they made absolutely no sense.

What did he mean by losing the will to live? Her father had just smiled at her that afternoon. He had told her he never blamed her for what happened. How could he possibly have lost his will to live?

Her voice was unnervingly calm. "Doctor, you must have made a mistake. My father is Benedict Newman. Could you check again? Maybe it's someone with the same name."

Xander's brow furrowed. He stepped up, wrapping his arms around her from behind, and murmured softly, "Nora."

She ignored him. A stubborn glint surfaced in her eyes, and a faint, fragile smile clung to her lips—one that looked like it would shatter at the slightest touch.

"We just made up today. My dad said he never blamed me. He even told me to come visit him again. How could he have taken his own life?"

Right at that moment, the doors to the resuscitation room swung open again. A nurse emerged, pushing a gurney. A stark white sheet was draped over it, obscuring the unmistakable silhouette of a human body beneath.

The rest of her words died in her throat. She went completely mute, a suffocating wave of despair slamming into her chest.

The doctor lowered his head. "I'm so sorry for your loss."

A violent tremble took over Nora's entire body. She reached out, wanting to pull back the white sheet, but her hand recoiled halfway there.

She couldn't bring herself to look.

She couldn't face the reality—what if the man lying underneath was truly her father?

Spinning around, she buried her face in Xander's chest. "It's not possible. That can't be my dad. It can't be, right? Tell me this isn't happening."

He gently rubbed her back, trying to soothe her. "Nora."
