Nora Newman only saw the missed calls from Cassie Fletcher when she returned home.
She froze for a moment. Ever since their last argument, Cassie hadn't initiated a single call, and Nora hadn't reached out either.
The fact that her daughter hadn't contacted her for so long meant she was safe, which was the most important thing.
Nora wouldn't hover over her with meticulous care like she used to, but she wouldn't miss her daughter's important events either. If Cassie needed her, Nora would fulfill her legal responsibilities until the girl turned eighteen.
Seeing so many missed calls, Nora feared something urgent had happened and quickly dialed back.
The call connected after a few rings, and Cassie's voice filtered through the speaker. "Mom, have you been really busy lately? Why haven't you called me?"
Cassie sounded pitifully wronged. Hearing it, Nora still felt a faint tug at her heartstrings. "Yeah, I've been a bit busy. What's wrong?"
Cassie hesitated for a second. "Can't I call you even if nothing's wrong? I miss you, Mom. I really want some Peach Glazed Pastries. Could you buy some and come see me?"
Nora was stunned by her daughter's soft, pleading tone.
It had been a long time since her daughter had spoken to her like that.
She remembered when Cassie first learned to talk, how she used to follow Nora around every day, clinging to her waist and calling for her mom. Nora took her everywhere. That period after Finnegan Fletcher passed away had been the happiest time of Nora's life.
Thank God she had her daughter by her side.
But later, everything had changed.
Nora let out a silent sigh. "Okay, wait for me at home."
Cassie agreed and ended the call.
