Nora watched her act all secretive, shook her head with an amused smile, and headed upstairs.
Cassie waited until Nora was upstairs before heading to the fridge. Just then, Martha Gable walked over and asked, "Little miss, why are you putting the cake in the fridge?"
Cassie hushed her in a whisper, "Shh, Martha, keep your voice down. These are for Seraphina."
Nora, remembering something else she needed to tell Cassie, had doubled back just in time to hear that exact sentence. She stopped in her tracks.
She heard Cassie continue, "Seraphina said she wanted Peach Glazed Pastries from this bakery, but the line is always so long and it's super annoying to buy them. So I told Mom I wanted them. I'll chill them in the fridge so they taste better, and when Seraphina visits, she can have delicious pastries."
Nora's breath hitched, and she turned around.
She stood frozen in place for a long time, unable to process it. She lowered her head, a self-deprecating smile flashing in her eyes.
So that was it. No wonder Cassie didn't want strawberry cakes anymore. It was because Seraphina Shaw liked Peach Glazed Pastries.
Thank goodness she hadn't bought everything in sight for her like she used to. That overwhelming maternal instinct had been restrained. Now, all she felt toward Cassie was a sense of responsibility.
Pretending she hadn't heard a thing, Nora turned and walked back upstairs.
Cassie pushed the bedroom door open and walked in. "Mom, these are the tools for The Willow Academy Arts & Crafts Competition. I want you to help me make it."
Cassie deliberately hid the fact that there was a prize for this competition.
She planned to give the prize to Seraphina. If her mom found out, what if she wanted it too?
She only had one prize, and it naturally had to go to Seraphina first.
