Seraphina spent the entire day consumed by anxiety. She was so distracted during her lab work that she nearly ruined several samples, her mind endlessly looping over whether Nora would reunite with Finnegan—and what that meant for her.
She couldn't just sit back and let things unfold.
Suddenly, her phone rang. Glancing at the screen, she saw Cassie's name. Seraphina quickly snapped out of her spiral and answered the call.
"Sera, what are you doing?" Cassie's sweet voice drifted through the speaker. "You haven't called me in forever. I missed you! Dad told me you were super busy and I shouldn't bother you."
Hearing the little girl's affectionate tone sparked a dark, brilliant idea in Seraphina's mind.
"Oh, Cassie, I'm just caught up with work. How about I bring you your favorite cake tonight?"
Cassie cheered. "Yay! I love you, Sera!"
But Cassie actually had an ulterior motive for calling. She had tried calling Nora, but it went straight to voicemail. Since her dad had mentioned that Mom and Sera worked at the same place, Cassie figured calling Sera was the fastest way to track her mother down.
"Sera, have you seen my mom? I tried calling her, but it didn't go through."
The smile instantly vanished from Seraphina's face. Cassie called her specifically to find Nora?
She had never done that before. A cold, suffocating wave of panic washed over Seraphina.
"Why are you looking for your mom, Cassie? Have I done something wrong? How about I be your mom instead?"
Cassie giggled sweetly. "I'd love that! I love you the most, Sera. But I need Mom to come help me with my crafts. My school is hosting a big arts and crafts competition, and it's really tiring. It hurts my hands."
