I Stopped Waiting and Started Loving novel Chapter 26

Was it possible... the stimulants had kicked in, leaving him so frustrated he had to take an ice-cold shower at the crack of dawn?

Bonnie groaned, slapping a hand over her own forehead in absolute despair.

She was dead.

If he found out she had acted completely on her own and drugged his food with vitality tonics, he would throw her out onto the street immediately.

Half an hour later, the water in the bathroom shut off.

Bonnie quickly squeezed her eyes shut, pretending to be in a deep sleep.

After the faint rustling of clothes, the bedroom door clicked shut, and the man left the room.

Bonnie finally opened her eyes and let out a massive sigh of relief.

For the rest of the morning, Bonnie played the role of the perfect, dutiful wife for Arthur.

She was sweet and attentive, keeping the old man grinning from ear to ear.

It wasn't until the afternoon that she followed Quentin into the car heading back to Riverstone Heights.

Throughout the entire ride, Quentin kept his eyes closed, leaning back against the seat in dead silence.

The air in the car was so oppressive it was hard to breathe.

Bonnie sat on pins and needles, her heart pounding frantically.

Her three-day trial period was officially over, and she had no idea if her performance was enough to keep her hired.

Just as the car was about to pull up to the apartment building, Jasper's phone buzzed.

Jasper glanced at the screen, then turned to address Quentin in the backseat.

"Sir, Dr. Lennox just sent a message. He'd like you to come into the hospital for a full-body checkup shortly."

Bonnie's heart instantly plummeted into her stomach.

A full-body checkup at the hospital?

It was entirely over now.

If the doctors asked a few basic questions and looked at his physical reactions, they would easily deduce he had been heavily dosed with stimulants for the past two days.

Once Quentin connected the dots, keeping her job would be the least of her worries—she'd be lucky just to walk away in one piece.

"Understood."

Quentin gave a flat response.

He opened his eyes and turned to look at Bonnie.

"Go head upstairs first."
