Mrs. Winters gripped her phone and sank completely to the floor, paralyzed as if she had been struck by lightning.
Meanwhile, Zoe followed the convoy to the Fort Hamilton Command Center, where she unexpectedly ran into Hayden, whom she hadn't seen for days.
Commissioner Jasper Sterling was waiting for her as well, a hint of awkwardness on his face.
"Ms. Lynd, this project still requires assistance from Commander Thorne. He has far more experience with the terrain and actual combat logistics than anyone else. You two will need to collaborate over the next few months. I hope that won't be an issue?"
Zoe was utterly speechless. First, the Easton Group had interfered with her company's projects, then Garrett had brought in his company, which she couldn't exactly refuse. When she had visited Timothy Yates, he had shown up under a different title. And now, she couldn't escape this forced collaboration with Hayden.
She found it bizarre. If Hayden was truly that indispensable, why hadn't he fought to keep the project for Sienna?
It was always such a massive coincidence. Whenever she started a major initiative, he somehow ended up playing a crucial role in it.
She simply couldn't avoid him, right when she had been celebrating the thought of never having to look at his face again.
Hayden stood there with a nonchalant air, his gaze calm and restrained. He didn't show the slightest hint of treating her differently than anyone else.
Zoe gave a tight, mocking smile, her lips pressing into a thin line.
When Commissioner Sterling didn't get an immediate response, he looked at Hayden smoothly and said, "I suppose I failed to notify you both properly about this collaboration. Mr. Thorne only just found out himself. You don't mind, do you, Mr. Thorne?"
Hayden cast an indifferent glance at Zoe, maintaining his usual icy demeanor. "If Ms. Lynd doesn't mind, I have no objections."
Zoe's hands curled into fists. She desperately wanted to snap at him. When did she ever say she didn't mind? She minded a lot! Why did she always have to partner with him on these projects? Was the entire military command incapable of functioning without him?
Despite her annoyance, a flicker of curiosity sparked within her. Just what kind of role did Hayden actually play among these high-ranking officials?
