"Why do you think your grandson brought Zoe all the way out here? Doesn't he want to win the girl?"
Arthur's interest was instantly piqued. "Hmm. Go on."
Alistair rolled his eyes so hard he nearly saw the back of his own skull.
"You fool. No wonder you couldn't get Beatrice Thorne to date you when you were young. The Kendall men are completely clueless when it comes to romance. It's a miracle you ever got married and your son managed to find a wife. You should be thanking your lucky stars. I'm actively creating opportunities for my goddaughter and your grandson. They need alone time if anything is going to happenβ"
Alistair brought his two thumbs together and wiggled them, flashing a deeply mischievous grin.
Arthur finally understood. The hostility vanished, replaced by a booming chuckle.
"You sly old dog."
The two old men huddled together, absolutely thrilled by their secret alliance.
Zoe and Garrett were completely oblivious.
When they emerged from their rooms with Lily to head to dinner, Alistair and Arthur stepped out as well.
Their previous animosity had evaporated entirely. Their heads were leaned close together, whispering conspiratorially.
Holding Garrett and Zoe's hands, Lily looked curiously at the two grandfathers ahead, then looked up at her mother.
"Mom, did Arthur and Alistair switch to arguing in lowercase? I can't hear a word they're saying."
Zoe's lips twitched. She had no idea how those two had suddenly become best friends.
Garrett was equally baffled, but mostly just relieved.
Between the two of them, they were well over a hundred and forty years old. If they actually got into a physical brawl, it would be a disaster.
At the five-star hotel restaurant, the group was ushered into a private dining room.
The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking view of the azure ocean and rows of swaying palm trees, perfectly framed by the setting sun. It was absolutely gorgeous.
Alistair secretly pinched Arthur, clearly dissatisfied. "Don't forget about me! Zoe is my goddaughter, too. Look at you, hogging all the credit."
Arthur sighed helplessly. "Fine, fine. The floor is yours."
Alistair beamed proudly. "Mr. Shaw, Director Yates, before my goddaughter officially accepted me, she was my star pupil. That paper published in the International Tech Journal under the name 'Lily'? She wrote it."
"Wait, so Ms. Lynd is actually Lily?"
Timothy was astounded. His gaze lingered on Zoe's face for nearly a full minute, his eyes revealing not just professional admiration, but the undeniable infatuation of a man captivated by a woman.
The moment Timothy saw Zoe, he was completely spellbound.
He had never believed in love at first sight until it hit him right then and there.
Standing nearby, Sebastian picked up on the subtle tension. "Ms. Lynd is incredibly accomplished for her age. It's a shame she's already paired up with Mr. Kendall here. Otherwise, Director Yates is still single; they would have made a wonderful match."
Lily had been quietly listening to the adults. But the moment she heard Garrett's name, she couldn't help but chime in: "Are my mom and Garrett dating?"
