Listening to George put on his "doting father" act, Stella let out a barely audible scoff.
George couldn't hear it over the phone, but Jarrod raised an eyebrow and shot her a sidelong glance.
She was standing there in his oversized silk pajamas, her eyes cast downward, fingers mindlessly twisting the hem of the shirt, looking like the picture of absolute docility.
It was as if that mocking sound hadn't come from her at all.
Jarrod smoothly withdrew his gaze and replied casually, "I won't."
"That's wonderful."
Getting the answer he wanted, George was thoroughly relieved. "Jarrod, you've been back in the country for a while now. Why don't you and Stella come over to the house for a family dinner this weekend?"
"He's incredibly busy with work. Don't pressure him," Stella instinctively interrupted.
George knew full well the three-year contract marriage was almost up, yet he was still desperately trying to kiss up to Jarrod.
He probably thought he could ride the coattails of being Jarrod's father-in-law forever.
Little did he know, Jarrod already had a woman he actually loved—a woman the Fuller family had already acknowledged and accepted.
George's greedy little fantasy was doomed to fail.
"How is this pressure? It was one thing when he was overseas, but now that Jarrod's back, surely he can spare a few hours to have a meal with his in-laws?"
George snapped at her, then immediately switched back to a syrupy tone for Jarrod. "Jarrod, how does Saturday work for you?"
"I'll have my secretary schedule it," Jarrod replied coolly.
The call ended, and Jarrod handed the phone back to Stella.
"Mr. Fuller, you really don't have to force yourself to go," Stella said apologetically. "If you're too busy, I can just go back by myself."
Jarrod neither agreed nor disagreed. He just looked at her and said, "Next time you come to Skyview, just call me. You don't have to wait out by the front gates."
Stella froze.
She realized Jarrod had completely misunderstood. He thought she had come to Skyview Lofts specifically to wait for him.
She wanted to explain herself. After all, Jarrod didn't have any real feelings for her, so he wouldn't care about her history with Logan anyway.
But the words died in her throat. George had just bent over backward to cover for her. If she blew his cover now, she'd never hear the end of his screaming.
