Why on earth would Jarrod bring up having a baby right now?

Noticing the shock and panic scrawled across her face, Jarrod said, "When we went to pick up Jasper the other day, the security guard mentioned children. You went quiet for a long time, so I assumed you wanted a baby."

She hadn't realized Jarrod was paying that close attention to her reactions back then.

Stella forced a small, tight smile. "You misunderstood. I never thought about that. I want a child to be born from love, into a family built on genuine affection."

Upon hearing that, Jarrod's eyes cooled, as if a sudden thought had doused the warmth. He released her wrist. "I was just asking. It didn't mean anything."

With that, he picked up the juice and took two sips.

Stella could sense his immediate displeasure, though she had no idea where it came from, nor the energy to guess.

Recalling Summer's advice from a few days ago, Stella bit her lip. She finally decided to ask the question that had been eating at her.

"Are the rumors about Director Huxley true?"

Stella continued, "She's been on sick leave for days, and people at the office are saying... she's pregnant."

The hand holding the glass twitched imperceptibly. He looked up at her, his dark eyes entirely unreadable. "What are you trying to say?"

Stella paused, then asked bluntly, "Is the baby yours?"

Jarrod casually set the glass down. Instead of answering, he fired back, "What do you think?"
