Chapter 467
She had fallen asleep in the place closest to her child.
Chris walked over and crouched in front of her. After a fnoment, he slowly sat down beside her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, letting her lean against him.
He did not know how much time had passed before Winter suddenly jolted awake.
“Baby!”
His arm tightened around her shoulders.
She looked up, and the panic in her eyes was impossible to hide. Chris frowned and pulled her closer.
“He’s fine,” he said quietly. “He’s resting.”
His low voice slowly steadied the frantic beat of her heart after the nightmare had startled her awake.
Winter looked at the digital clock on the wall.
She had slept for three hours.
Then she turned and looked at Chris’s arm around her shoulders.
How had he known she was here?
And why hadn’t he carried her back to her room while she was asleep?
Silently, she tried to pull his hand away and said in a flat voice, “I’m going back to my room.”
But Chris didn’t let go. Instead, he slipped his other arm beneath her and lifted her from the floor.
When he felt her quiet resistance, he only tightened his hold a little and said softly, “I’ll take you back.”
When she had fallen asleep here, he had only stayed beside her. He hadn’t forced her to leave against her will.
But now that she wanted to return to her room, he wouldn’t let her walk back alone.
Chris was still injured, but his steps remained steady. Winter didn’t feel even the slightest jolt in his arms.
Neither of them spoke on the way back.
The elevator descended slowly, their reflections faintly mirrored on the wall.
The next day at noon, Chris was working through some documents when Gavin knocked and entered.
“Mr. Xander, Dr. Carter is here.”
As soon as Gavin finished speaking, Chris looked up and saw a female doctor walk in from outside.
It was a face he hadn’t seen in a long time.
Dr. Olivia Carter was Dr. Lucas’s junior colleague and also a member of his medical team. For the past six months or so, she had been tied up with research, which was why she hadn’t come to Liono City with Dr. Lucas.
Chris, however, wasn’t surprised to see her.
Before hiring Dr. Lucas, he had already had Gavin run background checks on every member of the team.
It had been a long time since that undercover mission ended.
The woman in the white coat looked gentle and composed. She smiled faintly.
“Long time no see, Roy.”
