Chapter 500
“Mr. Xander has already taken Mrs. Xander upstairs,” Gavin said.
He had no intention of staying any longer, so he turned to leave.
But Wendy followed him, yawning as she said, “By the way, Gavin, I just remembered. We met a long time ago, didn’t we?”
This yawn was real.
When Gavin glanced at her, her eyes were watery. She really did look exhausted.
“Yes.”
He had always had a good memory, He remembered everyone he had met, especially Winter’s coworkers. He had run background checks on all of them, so of course he remembered Wendy.
Wendy cursed silently.
That wasn’t how this was supposed to go.
She had planned to wait for him to say he did not remember, then casually bring up the first time they met at Xander Corporation, when she had gone in Winter’s place to interview Chris.
Wouldn’t that have given them something to talk about?
But Gavin actually remembered her.
The opening she had prepared was useless now. Still, the simple fact that he remembered made her want to smile.
She cleared her throat and pretended to stay calm. Then she gave a soft laugh, her voice lifting slightly at the end.
“So you do remember. I didn’t expect that.”
Gavin showed no reaction. His face remained expressionless as he kept walking toward the exit.
“Are you still working this late?” Wendy asked.
Gavin said flatly, “I’m going to kill someone.”
He thought that would scare Wendy off.
After all, Wendy had grown up in a highly educated family. She was a good, law-abiding citizen.
Girls like her were usually easy to scare.
Unexpectedly, Wendy was not frightened at all. Instead, her brows lifted, and she said excitedly, “Oh, I know all about that. I used to follow my mom to work late all the time when I was little. I’ve seen countless autopsies. I know how to handle a body. Perfect! I can help you.”
Gavin fell silent.
He looked at the woman in front of him. She seemed eager, but he saw right through her.
She didn’t believe for a second that he was actually going to kill someone.
Even after he told her Winter and Chris had gone upstairs, she had still stayed and followed him toward the exit. She had probably known from the start that Winter wasn’t here.
Now it was clear.
She had come downstairs for him.
So that was what she had in mind.
The moment the realization landed, he gave her no room to hope or imagine anything further.
“We’re not the same kind of people,” he said flatly.

The next morning, after Winter woke up, she suddenly asked for breakfast on her own.
William was overjoyed and quickly had the prepared breakfast brought in.
He placed a shrimp ravioli on her plate.
“The chef at home made these himself. The shrimp is fresh and springy. Your favorite.”
Winter picked up the ravioli and took a bite.
The truth was, she could barely taste anything anymore.
But she didn’t tell William that. Instead, she smiled slightly and said, “It tastes the same as before. It’s good.”
She ate three in a row, then finished half a bowl of chicken soup.
“Why is your appetite so good today?” William asked, handing her a napkin.
Winter wiped the corner of her mouth and thought of what had happened after Chris walked her back to her room last night.
At the door, he had added one more condition, “Eat a proper breakfast, and I’ll show you two more videos.”
Chris was using Richie as leverage now.
And it was working.
