Zion regretted it as soon as he said it.
Roy wasn’t the type to curse people out. Not even for Winter’s sake.
But then, to Zion’s surprise, Roy’s fingers moved across the screen.
“Chris Xander is a bastard.”
Zion froze.
So Roy did know how to curse.
Winter lifted her eyes and glanced at the phone screen. The corner of her mouth tugged faintly, and she gave a weak smile.
Roy suppressed a cough deep in his throat. His grip tightened around the handle of his cane as he forced himself to stay upright. Then he hooked a chair with the cane and pulled it to the bedside.
He sat down and typed another line on his phone.
“If you cannot make sense of something, then stop trying to force an answer. Not everything in this world comes with one. Chris may have interfered with your life, but you are still Winter Scott. No one can change that except you.
“If you give up on yourself, then the Winter Scott I know will truly disappear. You are still you. No matter what Chris took from you, no one gets to take away the part of you that survived. Not even you.”
Winter’s red eyes filled again.
She looked at the man in front of her through the blur of tears and met his dark brown eyes.
Roy typed one last sentence.
“Eat something. Live for yourself.”
It was as if a crack opened in the fog inside Winter’s mind, and a thin beam of light slipped through.
Her pale lips moved. Her voice was dry and hoarse.
“Okay.”
Hearing her answer, Roy’s tightly furrowed brows slowly eased.
Zion immediately brought the tray over. A gloved hand reached out, took it from him, and held it in front of Winter.
Dominic drove back to the Lynch estate.
When he reached the courtyard, his steps slowed. Off to the side, a red sports car was parked under the dim light.
So she still remembered how to come home.
He didn’t bother asking the housekeeper where Lily was. He went straight inside and up to the second floor.
As he passed her bedroom, he heard the faint sound of running water.
A meaningful smile tugged at his lips. He lifted a hand and undid the top button of his shirt. Then, as he pushed open the door that had been left slightly ajar, he continued with the rest.
Ever since he first ambushed her in the shower and forced himself on her, she never forgot to lock the bathroom door.
But now, beneath the steady rush of water, his hand closed around the doorknob and pressed down.
It opened.
She probably hadn’t expected him to come back at this hour, so she had let her guard down.
Steam filled the bathroom as Dominic closed the distance, the bare skin of his chest pressing against her wet back as he pulled her flush against him.
“You’ve been gone for days,” he said softly. “Where have you been?”
“Get out.” Lily’s face was cold, without the slightest trace of emotion.
Dominic liked seeing that calm mask crack.
She had been adopted from an orphanage before he was born. In name, she was his elder sister. In blood, she was nothing to him.
He slid his hands up her sides, his fingers slick with the rich lather coating her skin. “Why does my sweet sister have to be so mean the second she gets home?”
A sharp slap struck his right cheek.
Dominic didn’t get angry. He caught her hand and brought it to his lips. The instant her expression shifted, his gaze darkened.
“Lily, I warned you,” he said. “Hit me again, and I’ll really lose control.”
Dominic walked over with the cigarette between his fingers. He bent down and kissed the area behind her ear.
“Don’t take anything,” he said. “I suddenly think kids are kind of cute. Let’s have one.”
After spending the past few days with Richie, Dominic had started thinking about having a child. Richie was sick, but he was still unbelievably adorable.
The first time Dominic had held him, the thought had already crossed his mind.
And in this world, the only person he wanted a child with was Lily.
A cold laugh slipped from Lily’s lips.
Dominic acted as if he hadn’t heard it.
“Chris is injured, so I’ll be at the hospital for the next few days. Behave yourself.”
With that, he picked up a jacket, draped it over his arm, and left Lily’s room.
When Dominic returned to the hospital, Chris was actually sitting against the headboard, reviewing documents.
Only after Chris finished signing the last page did Dominic notice a familiar case on the bedside table.
Wasn’t that the case Chris used for his muscle suit?
Dominic was speechless.
“You disguised yourself and went to see Winter again?”
Chris gave a faint hum.
“At least she ate something.”
But Chris didn’t know that as soon as he left, Winter threw up everything she had eaten.
She vomited until her entire body shook.
She vomited until there was nothing left, only dry heaves.
