Game Over, Mr. CEO: Your Wife Is Done (Winter and Chris) novel Chapter 421

Her face was smudged with dirt. In the woods, the light had been too dim for him to notice. Now that he was close, he finally saw it.

Almost instinctively, Chris reached out to wipe it away.

Winter turned her face aside.

“If you hadn’t shown up, I’d be down the mountain by now.”

Chris’s hand stopped in midair. His fingers stiffened slightly. His gaze stayed locked on her.

“I’ll take you down the mountain,” he said stubbornly. “I told you I’d stay with you.”

Standing beside Winter, William frowned.

Why did Chris sound almost pitiful?

Was he imagining it?

What was this? Since force wasn’t working, was Chris trying to play the sympathy card now?

Fortunately, Winter didn’t fall for it.

**“**I’ll be safe with William and Sean,” she said. “I don’t know if Skyla is still alive, but instead of wasting time with me here, you should go find her.”

She had only wanted to shift Chris’s attention.

She hadn’t expected his expression to darken.

William. Sean. And now she was bringing up someone else.

“She means nothing to me,” Chris said coldly. “Why do you keep bringing her up?”

Before he had even finished speaking, he took another step forward, almost reaching Winter.

**“**I have never cared about her.”

William reacted fast. He stepped in front of Winter and shielded her behind him.

“Now you know how to explain yourself?” he snapped. “Too late. Who knows if anything you say is true? Get lost.”

His body blocked Chris’s outstretched hand just as Chris was about to pull Winter away by force.

The moment William drew Winter behind him in a protective stance, Chris’s eyes turned sharp and cold.

“Move.”

Bang!

No one knew who fired first.

In the woods, Skyla stared at Winter’s back as William shielded her.

The gun in Skyla’s hand shook with the force of her hatred.

Her lips curved into a smile, even as more tears spilled down her face.

But just before she pressed the button, she looked up toward the sound of gunfire.

Chris’s men and Sean’s bodyguards had already clashed. William was leading Winter down the mountain, but he seemed to have pulled at his old wound. His steps had slowed.

Skyla’s hand tightened around the detonator, then paused.

This distance.

This direction.

A thought struck her, and wild satisfaction flooded her eyes. She rushed toward them like a madwoman.

William only stopped for two seconds before saying to Winter, “I’m fine. Keep going. Sean can hold Chris off.”

Suddenly, an explosion went off beside them.

Winter dodged on instinct, and the rocks thrown up by the blast separated her from William.

William was about to run toward her when a ghostlike figure shot out from the trees and grabbed Winter.

“Don’t come any closer!”

Skyla dragged Winter backward step by step, the cold barrel of the gun pressed against Winter’s forehead.
