William’s blood ran cold. His pupils trembled.
“Skyla Jasper, let her go!”
“Let her go?” Skyla laughed.
Branches had cut several bloody lines across her face. Blood trailed down her pale skin and gathered at her jaw. When she smiled, the dried blood cracked at the edges, making her look almost ghostly.
Then her smile slowly faded.
“When she’s dead, I’ll let her go.”
Chris had been dealing with Sean, but he had never stopped watching Winter. The second someone threw an explosive toward her and William, he shook off the Zeller bodyguards and rushed over.
Then he saw Winter in Skyla’s grip, with a gun pressed to her head.
Winter’s face was bloodless from the cold and exhaustion. She looked frighteningly fragile, as if one more blow could break her.
A layer of frost seemed to settle over Chris’s face. His fingers tightened around his gun until his knuckles creaked.
He had prepared for almost everything, yet he had still failed to account for Skyla making it this far.
“Chris,” Skyla said softly.
The moment she saw him, a gentle smile appeared on her face.
She had known it. As long as Winter was in danger, Chris would come as fast as he could.
The truth was, Skyla had known for a long time that Chris loved Winter.
Chris simply refused to admit it. Over time, Skyla had numbly convinced herself too, telling herself that Chris didn’t love Winter at all.
She had thought the feud between their parents’ generation stood between them like an unbreakable wall. She had thought Chris hated the Scott family to the bone. She had thought he could never love Winter again.
But he still loved her.
He loved her even more than before.
When Skyla realized Chris was about to come closer, she tightened her grip on Winter and backed away.
“Stop!” Her voice rose, shaking. “Chris, stop right there! Don’t come any closer!”
“If you want something, take it out on me.” Chris’s voice was low and rough, edged with unmistakable killing intent. “Let her go.”
“Let her go so the two of you can be together?” Skyla’s eyes were red, and she gritted her teeth. “I’ll never allow that. Not even if I die!”
Skyla’s hand trembled around the gun.
“He won’t love anyone else!”
Chris was the most loyal man she had ever known.
A man like him, with that kind of temperament—cold, wild, and impossible to tame—rarely gave his heart to anyone.
But Winter had gotten it.
She had gotten the one love that belonged only to him.
Skyla kept the gun pressed to Winter’s head and looked at Chris.
“You never announced that you and Winter had nothing to do with each other. Why did you make a fake page to lie to me? Why?”
In the basement, she had only suspected it.
But after Garrett rescued her, she had used his phone to log in to social media.
Chris had never posted anything at all.
