Gavin went up the stairs, and Chris turned to leave the basement.

“Chris!” Skyla called after him. “Do you really feel nothing for what we used to have?”

Her voice, full of hope and pain, echoed through the empty basement.

Chris was walking up the steps when he heard her. His footsteps stopped.

What they used to have…

He let out a soft, mocking laugh.

“What exactly are you talking about?” His voice was cold to the extreme. “The fact that you saved my life, or the part where you threatened to die so I would agree to be your boyfriend?”

Saved his life.

Skyla heard the open mockery in Chris’s words, and a chill spread through her heart.

After the truth came out that she had only pretended to be disabled, the life debt between them became simple.

Over the years, the Xander family had given the Jasper family more than enough. They had repaid her for saving him long ago.

Her legs were perfectly fine. Chris no longer owed her anything.

But how could she accept him treating her so coldly? It was nowhere near enough for him to simply clarify that he had nothing to do with Winter.

“When you agreed to be with me back then, did you really not feel even the slightest bit of pity for me? Before that, whenever I came to you in trouble, you helped me. Are you saying I truly had no place in your heart at all?”

Chris turned his head slightly. The sharp lines of his profile looked deep and striking, carrying a coldness that seemed to seep into the air.

“If she hadn’t mentioned you to me, I never would have paid any attention to you at all. A place in my heart? You think you deserve that?”

Skyla didn’t need to ask who he meant by “she.”

Who else could it be but Winter?

“So you’re saying I only got the chance to get close to you because of Winter?”

Skyla remembered that day clearly. It had been Winter’s graduate school commencement, and Skyla had found out early that Winter planned to confess her feelings to Chris after the ceremony.

Winter might have been graduating from grad school, but she had only been twenty–one at the time. She was still a young woman full of romantic hopes.

In that moment, the only thought in Skyla’s mind was that she couldn’t let anything happen to Chris.

The instant she threw herself toward him, the car flipped twice from the force of the crash.

No matter how skilled Chris was, no matter how strong he was, there was no way he could have avoided an impact like that.

By then, Skyla had already discovered the truth about her own background. She had connections in the shadows, and with their help, she managed to fake the injury to her legs.
